ANNA MARIA ISLAND SUMMER 2018 TURTLE TALK

Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch is a group coordinating with county, state and federal efforts in the conservation of sea turtles. The sea turtles to nest on the island will either be loggerhead or green sea turtles. Manatee and Sarasota County hosts the highest density of loggerhead nests in the Gulf of Mexico.

During turtle season, May 1 through Oct. 31, dedicated volunteers walk along Anna Maria Island to scan for distinct sea turtle tracks. Their job is seven days of the week with no holidays, requires special training, and includes early-morning walks along the beach. They walk along the sandy beach and waterline each day looking for any tracks a sea turtle may have left overnight. For more than thirty years volunteers have monitored twelve miles of Manatee shoreline. Their monitoring includes turtle activities, protecting the nests, and watching the hatchlings depart as they make their way into the Gulf of Mexico. They watch with the hope mature loggerheads will return in about 30 years.
Periodically Anna Maria Island Turtle Walk offers Free Turtle Talks. These events are open to the public.
