Super Bowl — Tampa, Florida

One of the most watched annual sporting events in the world. It all comes down to Super Bowl LV, the 55th annual showdown between the best of the best in the NFL. Despite how strange the last year was, some things never change—and the Super Bowl is one constant. The Super Bowl is an event football fans as well non-football fans look forward to all year long. This year it is in our neighborhood. After nearly two decades, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made it back to the Super Bowl.

Oh how I would love to get my hands on some reasonably priced tickets and gift them to some fans I know would love to be among those attending the Super Bowl in person. To clarify, the tickets would be for my husband and our son. They would be over the moon to make the easy drive from Anna Maria Island to Tampa and take their seats at the Raymond James Stadium. I am happy to stay home, rooting for the Bucs from the comfort of the couch. I will watch a little of the game and anxiously wait for the start of the half time show. How lucky or wealthy are those Super Bowl ticket holders? I ask this because I know that it’s not easy to get a ticket and the tickets are remarkably expensive, reaching into the thousands of dollars. When I checked NFL On Location earlier today there are tickets available prices ranging from $5312.50 to $15300.00 per ticket. A little above my budget so no, I didn’t buy any. The value of the ticket price to attend Super Bowl 55 is certainly subjective. If you don’t get tickets to attend and your team wins you are still happy but, paying that large sum and your team loses? Not just the loss, but with that money you could have easily purchased a beautiful new 75” flat screen television instead…ouch that hurts!

While you pick your seat for the big game, enjoy these interesting Super Bowl LV facts…
— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face off against the 2020 Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs. This is the first time these two teams have squared off in the Super Bowl.
— The game will be played Sunday, February 7 with kick-off at 3:30 pm PT 6:30 pm ET
— Super Bowl 55 will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
— This will be the fifth time Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl and the third at Raymond James Stadium.
— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be the first team in NFL history to play a Super Bowl at their own stadium.
— There is always a first, but so far, no team has ever won the Super Bowl in their home stadium.
— Buccaneers quarterback 43 year old Tom Brady will make his 10th Super Bowl appearance, which is an NFL record. This will be his first outside of New England, where he spent the first 20 seasons of his career with the Patriots.
— Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who won Super Bowl MVP in the Chiefs’ last title, is looking to become the youngest QB in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowls. He won in 2019 at age 24 and is looking to do it again at 25.
— Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman will recite her latest work ahead of the coin toss.
— Marine veteran James Martin will kick off the game with a coin toss.
— Carl Cheffers will referee the game as part of a crew featuring Sarah Thomas, who will become the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl.
— Three-time Grammy Award-winning artist The Weeknd will perform at the halftime show. You can expect his halftime show to start around 8 pm ET.

— Super Bowl LV will be televised on CBS. NBC was originally scheduled to broadcast the 2021 game and CBS had the 2022 Super Bowl, the networks swapped years so the NBC would have both the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics in 2022.

— Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Super Bowl LV will be the lowest-attended Super Bowl ever. Attendance has been capped at about 22,000. That number includes 7,500 vaccinated health care workers that will attend the game on an all-expense paid trip. The stadium will be about a third full.
So where will you be sitting to watch the Super Bowl? We will be staying home and are looking forward to a great take-out feast from one of our favourite local restaurants. We have already pre-ordered so when game day arrives we aren’t scrambling to get our order together, we just have to pick-up.

Celebrations will look a lot different this year because of COVID-19, but there are safe ways to cheer on your team while you enjoy your favourite foods. For those watching the game in our Anna Maria Island area, there are many restaurant dining options with outdoor space.

Takeout is also a great option to consider and it is always nice to support the local restaurants.

Outdoor Beach Market at Coquina Beach – Anna Maria Island

Whether you’ve visited us before or it is your first time on Anna Maria Island there is plenty of activity waiting to welcome you.

One of our favourites is a visit to the Beach Market at Coquina Beach. The Beach Market is a free, family friendly, seasonal market located a short walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals Inc. A perfect place to shop outdoors, especially this year as we avoid crowded indoor shopping space. Also, this is a great way to support local businesses while learning where they are from and how they make what they sell.

At the Coquina Beach Market you will find a variety of quality artisans and vendors selling home baked goods, a colourful array of fresh local produce, hand crafted clothing, antiques, and unique original artwork everywhere you look. With so many unique items you’re sure to find something that will thrill those on your Christmas list.

Imagine telling your friends and family you walked along a pathway covered with tall pine canopies looking out at the beautiful turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico to buy their Christmas gift. They might not believe you, until…you show them your pictures!

You will feel the great vibe as you walk throughout this market as it truly portrays the spirit of Anna Maria Island. We hope you enjoy shopping the many great local vendors as much as we do.
The Beach Market at Coquina Beach is open for the 2020/2021 season —
10:00 am to 4:00 pm
December to March on Sunday and Wednesday.
Open Wednesday and Friday for those of you staying with us from April to July.

The event is located at 2650 Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach.

As you stroll the market you can enjoy listening to the AMI String Band as they perform live from 10:30-2:30. And, if shopping in the Florida fresh air makes you hungry the Coquina Cafe is open serving good food and drinks.

Here are a few of our favourites that we’re sure Dad will like too —
Beach-House-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals
Beach House – 200 Gulf Drive, Bradenton Beach
The Beach House is a world-class restaurant is just a few minute walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals located directly on the beach. You will find waterfront dining with a laid-back casual atmosphere featuring air-conditioned indoor seating as well as climate friendly outdoor seating. Serving superb, fresh seafood as well as other fabulous entrees the Beach House is a top choice when dining on Bradenton Beach. If you are planning dinner at this gulf-front restaurant you will have the perfect spot to watch a beautiful Anna Maria Island sunset.

Sandbar Restaurant – 100 Spring Avenue, Anna Maria
Inside and outside dining, literally yards from the water. Enjoy being seated around a table with your feet in the sand while your food is being prepared creatively and with a wait staff that’s friendly and prompt. Sound inviting? If you are looking for a truly locally sourced dining experience we recommend the Sandbar restaurant. Goods grown in their own farm, serving fish fresh from the docks at Cortez and they make their own breads. Their menu features picked and plated produce, locally grown clams and locally grown fruits and vegetables.
If you are looking to start Dad’s day with brunch? Sunday brunch will be served starting at 10:00 am at the Sandbar.
Dinner will be served at both the Beach House and the Sandbar.

The Moose is calling all Fathers! The Anna Maria Island Moose invites you to visit on Sunday June 16th where you can relax inside or kick back and enjoy some sunshine on their outdoor patio or rooftop terrace. And, Dad will receive a drink on them!
The Moose Lodge has special craft beer taps…maybe 10 on tap…I think that’s more than any other Island establishment?!

Waterfront Restaurant – 111 South Bay Blvd., Anna Maria
Anna Maria’s waterfront casual dining restaurant with a touch of class. It’s slightly higher end than most places in the area, but we think it’s worth it. You can sit outside and enjoy the waterfront gulf view, be seated inside, or on the back patio. Reservations are accepted for inside dining. Patio seating is first come first serve. We recommend their fish tacos, fresh Snapper and the Grouper is fabulous. As well, the Kale and Brussels Sprouts salad is excellent! Great food with fabulous craft cocktails and for dessert their delicious key lime pie … a perfect place to treat Dad!

WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN COMPETITION Anna Maria Island & Bradenton, Florida

Tachi Palace World’s Strongest Man competition June 13th – June 16th 2019 brings with it the Game of Thrones star Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, also known for his role as Sir Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on the HBO show.

After an eventful competition in the Philippines last year, which followed two consecutive years of the contest taking place in Botswana, the 2019 World’s Strongest Man competition is back in United States. The contest took place in the United States in 2014 when the World’s Strongest Man was held in Los Angeles. This will be the very first time for the event to be held in Florida!

The World’s Strongest Man competition has been held annually since 1977 and this
year’s event is not only taking place in Florida, but right here on the beautiful beaches of Anna Maria Island as well as on Old Main Street in Bradenton, Florida.
The four day competition from Thursday, June 13th until Sunday, June 16th will include three days of qualifiers and a one-day finale. This year will bring a change from years past with five events in each qualification round and all of the groups will be doing the same five events. The five events include: truck pull, super yoke and farmer’s walk medley, overhead press, deadlift and last man standing. From pulling trucks to lifting and pressing logs, the challenges are designed to push the competitors to their limits, testing their physical strength, their agility and mental toughness.

The public is invited to watch all competitions, free of charge.

So what does this mean for guests of Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals? —
— No tickets and all events will be free to attend.
— Our guests will watch the planet’s greatest strongmen compete for what may be the most coveted title in strength sports.
— You will see 25 of the sport’s most-dominant strength athletes compete for the title. — The event set-ups will be fan friendly.
— All events on the beach are within walking distance from your condo. Alternatively, you can take the Free Island Trolley to both Coquina Beach and Manatee Public Beach. Those events being held in Bradenton are approximately a 10-20 minute drive from Anna Maria Condo Rentals.

— The field of athletes will include the reigning champion and star of “Game of Thrones” Hafthor Julius Bjornsson. Bjornsson — who is 6 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs around 400 pounds — portrayed Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, an imposing enforcer for House Lannister, for five seasons, including the eighth and final season that concluded earlier this month. Last year, the Icelandic strongman won World’s Strongest Man, Europe’s Strongest Man and the Arnold Strongman Classic. Other competitors are, four-time World’s Strongest Man champion Brian Shaw of the United States and the 2018 runner-up, Mateusz Kieliszkowski from Poland.
— Twenty-five athletes in total will compete over the three days of qualifiers and one-day final.

beach-shopping-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals

Our Favourite Beach Shops — Anna Maria Island, Florida

Our Favourite Beach Shops — Anna Maria Island, Florida

Anna Maria Island has it all — beautiful beaches, amazing food, plenty of old Florida charm as well as many unique beach shops. As you enjoy the paradise of Anna Maria Island, your days at the beach and shopping if you choose to fit it in, here is a list of our favourite beach shops —

Alvin’s Island — 3658 E Bay Drive, Holmes Beach, FL
A great place, Alvin’s is so much more than a tourist beach gift shop. Surf shop, beach accessories, souvenirs and anything you need for your vacation at the beach.
They are always friendly even if they get busy and we shop here often!
They have a huge selection of souvenirs and clothes with a great selection of reasonably priced swimsuits. Their merchandise is good quality and prices are good whether you’re shopping the sale racks or not. Anna Maria Island logo’s hats, tees, shot glasses… you name it they have it.

Bridge Street Interiors — 100 Bridge Street, Bradenton Beach, FL
Don’t let the name fool you, once inside you will be pleasantly surprised with their merchandise. This is a really fun and relaxing place to shop. The owners are amazing and the products they sell are truly wonderful.
They have lots of cute costume jewelry, home decorations, scents, candles & tropical apparel. In the back they do have interior design services and can help you with your decorating needs. There are so many unique things in this store that it might just be my favourite on Anna Maria Island.

Green Turtle Shell & Gift Shop — 701 Gulf Drive North, Bradenton Beach, FL
The fun gifts and souvenirs you’ll want to bring home from the island are waiting here! From a large variety of shells to funky beach accessories they have it all. There is also a selection of  jewelry, home decor, T-shirts and all the beach goodies you will want.
The Green Turtle Shop is only a few minute walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals and trust me your kids will love it. Our adult children still talk about their fond memories of many visits to the “Turtle Shop” and are now experiencing the same with their children.

Island Bazaar, East Bay Drive, Holmes Beach, Florida
Bridge Street Bazaar – Bridge Street, Bradenton Beach, Florida
Island Bazaar offers two shops on Anna Maria Island. These two stores are popular beach tourist shops, one located in Holmes Beach and one in Bradenton Beach. My personal preference is the Holmes Beach location, which is the larger of the two. It has a large selection of beach wear including swimsuits, sun hats, and shoes. Both offer an array of clothing, hats, towels and all the beach souvenirs you could ask for. Lots of toys and trinkets that kids love looking through.

Sand Dollar Gift Shop — 5302 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, FL
The Sand Dollar Gift Shop is a unique boutique in Holmes Beach with a different feel than other shops on Anna Maria Island. They have a limited selection of stylish beachy clothes and jewelry. You will find lots of candles, soaps and home decor. This is a great shop to find unique gifts and keepsakes. Browsing in this little boutique is always enjoyable.

Sun & Surf Beach — 5418 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, Florida
Before you enter the store you will be greeted by about a dozen resident parrots. Everyday the friendly staff of this surf shop pull the parrot cages outside of the shaded store front to greet their guests. These entertaining parrots, each individually named, are a hit with adults and children alike. Once inside you can expect a fun tropical shopping experience with a nice selection of beach attire. The shop has lots of beach themed T-shirts, cover-ups and swim wear too. And, sometimes you’ll find furniture and other knick-knacks. There is a small play area for kids while you shop—such a great idea to help keep kids occupied. But, if they get bored you can take them back outside for another visit with the talking parrots.

West Coast Surf Shop — 3902 Gulf Drive North, Holmes Beach, Florida
This is the oldest surf shop on Florida’s west coast and sells items relevant to having fun on the beach and in the water. They have a large selection of swimwear, sportswear, surfboards, skimboards, skateboards, accessories, sunglasses, sandals and more.
