THE ROUNDABOUT WAY ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND WILL TRAFFIC SIGNALS BE OBSOLETE ?

How do you feel about roundabouts?
There have been many debates on how roundabouts affect safety and how traffic flow is affected. Improved roads, safety, and better traffic flow are the results in mind for road reconstruction, I’m not sure all are achieved with a roundabout. In general, I am not an opponent of roundabouts. There are some that I avoid at all costs, and a few others that I navigate out of necessity, despite feeling uncomfortable every time I enter them.
 bridge-street-anna-maria-island
Presently, we have one roundabout on Anna Maria Island located in Bradenton Beach, but a recent traffic study by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) tells us more are planned. The Bradenton Beach roundabout is in the middle of the city, on Gulf Drive and Bridge Street. This very popular area of the Island built the roundabout in 1994, replacing a two-way stop.
Not everyone likes this Bradenton Beach roundabout. Some of their Longboat Key neighbours to the south are not at all happy with it. Longboat Key Mayor Spoll believes it bogs down Island traffic flow, causing traffic jams for drivers traveling north through his city and recently said he would like Bradenton Beach city leaders to remove it. Congestion is certainly a problem in this area. Travelling between Longboat Pass Bridge, on the north end of Longboat Key, and the Cortez Bridge, on the north end of Bradenton Beach, especially during the winter months, the travel congestion can be compared to that of a very bad nightmare.
roundabout-traffic-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals
Bradenton Beach Mayor Chappie said the roundabout needs to stay in place to help keep pedestrians and motorists safe. He said the roundabout, with its yield signs and four crosswalks, helps to separate pedestrians from motorists, preventing accidents.
While I agree with Mayor Chappie that pedestrian safety features should be in place, I feel that unbearable traffic congestion needs to be addressed as well.
 ami-roundabouts-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals
With traffic backups on the island, The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is looking at adding roundabouts as part of its Barrier Island Traffic Study. These roundabouts would improve island traffic flow. Three roundabouts on Anna Maria Island have been proposed, one at East Bay Drive and Manatee Avenue which would include removing the traffic signal, another at the intersection of Palm/Marina-Key Royale Drive, in Holmes Beach and the third one for northbound motorists on Gulf Drive at Cortez Road in Bradenton.
Roundabouts may not be the answer to all the Island traffic issues, but the elimination of traffic signals as planned in the barrier island traffic study would be a real benefit when not having to wait for power to be restored during a storm, hurricane or evacuation. 2017 Hurricane Irma is a strong reminder of that.
Now for a few facts as sourced 7/18 from the Florida Department of Transportation
Benefits of Roundabouts
Roundabouts are increasingly becoming more popular due to the benefits that they provide. These benefits include dramatic reductions in serious injury and fatality crashes as well as reductions in delay for road users. Benefits of modern roundabouts have been shown to occur in both urban and rural areas under a wide range of traffic conditions.
The Federal Highway Administration designated roundabouts as one of nine proven safety counter measures. Roundabouts provide a number of benefits as described below:
Safety
• Fewer crashes, 90% fewer fatalities and 75% fewer injuries
• Fewer severe crashes
• 10 to 40% fewer pedestrian/bicycle crashes
• Roundabouts are safer for beginner and elderly drivers
• Can be used in multiple road intersections
Time Savings 30 to 50% increase in traffic capacity for intersection, less delay waiting at stops and signals
Environmentally Friendly
• Reduces pollution (from cars not waiting at traffic signals), reduces noise, reduces fuel consumption
• Roundabout islands can be landscaped with native plants and trees
• Roundabouts generally take less land than traditional intersections as they don’t require turning lanes
Saves Money
• Without traffic signals, no cost for traffic signals and yearly maintenance
• Intersection still operates in power outages, no need for police to direct traffic
• Roundabouts can help  improve sales at nearby businesses across the country as more people can walk or easily drive to locations compared to traditional intersections
• Can act as a marker to a business or downtown district
 anna-maria-island-condo-rentals-roundabouts
My question is, will these proposed roundabouts on Anna Maria Island eliminate delays allowing vehicular traffic to move quicker in congestion areas while providing safe conditions for pedestrians?
The third phase of the FDOT’s Barrier Island Traffic Study begins this fall with completion expected in Spring 2019. According to DOT projects such as roundabouts typically take 1-3 years to complete.
Whether we agree or disagree there may be no way ‘round it. Traffic signals on Anna Maria Island could become obsolete as discussions go round and round.

ANNA MARIA CITY PIER, RESTAURANT & BAIT SHOP DEMOLITION

🎵 Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind 🎵
AM-Pier-Demo-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals
And the sign said — PIER CLOSED
And another sign said — NO TRESPASSING, AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
These signs have been “blocking out the scenery” of the number one attraction in Manatee County since September 2017. The Anna Maria City Pier, built in 1911 has been battered over the years by storms, but the significant damage from Hurricane Irma caused its closure. A short time following, and after an extensive review, the Mayor and Commissioners of the City of Anna Maria voted for a new pier to be built that looks exactly like the old one. The restaurant and bait shop that sit at the end of the pier will look exactly the same as well. The new pier will feature the latest in construction techniques using concrete pilings and Kebony hardwood decking and siding. It will be the same length, 776 feet long and has been designed to last 75 to 100 years.
anna-maria-island-city-pier-deomolition-begins
While the signs are still there, the scenery has changed. On Monday, July 9 the demolition process began with the removal of the metal roof and the remaining contents inside the vacant restaurant and bait shop. Wednesday, July 11 the scene was of a demolition area with two barge-mounted excavators docked alongside the vacant pier building with the restaurant and bait shop building still standing. The following day, Thursday, July 12 the scene changes again when the restaurant and bait shop building at the pier’s end are demolished. Within the next week or two a local crew are scheduled to remove the remaining engraved wooden pier planks.
anna-maria-island-city-pier-planks-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals
These planks will be stored and used later to build memorial walls at a nearby park. Once the engraved planks are removed the main pier structure will be demolished and then the existing wooden pier pilings will be removed. The demolition is expected to end in the mid September with the building of the platform expected to start late August 2018 and conclude July 2019. Work on the bait shop and restaurant is scheduled to begin in April 2019 with all work to be completed by December 2019.
The end of an era, the beginning of a new one.
The community, residents, visitors and people from all over the world have memories of the old Anna Maria City Pier and if everything goes according to plan, by the end of next year they will be making new ones.
While the signs might be Blockin out the scenery, the scenery is changing and the signs will too!

ANNA MARIA ISLAND SUMMER 2018 TURTLE TALK

Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch is a group coordinating with county, state and federal efforts in the conservation of sea turtles. The sea turtles to nest on the island will either be loggerhead or green sea turtles. Manatee and Sarasota County hosts the highest density of loggerhead nests in the Gulf of Mexico.
During turtle season, May 1 through Oct. 31, dedicated volunteers walk along Anna Maria Island to scan for distinct sea turtle tracks. Their job is seven days of the week with no holidays, requires special training, and includes early-morning walks along the beach. They walk along the sandy beach and waterline each day looking for any tracks a sea turtle may have left overnight. For more than thirty years volunteers have monitored twelve miles of Manatee shoreline. Their monitoring includes turtle activities, protecting the nests, and watching the hatchlings depart as they make their way into the Gulf of Mexico. They watch with the hope mature loggerheads will return in about 30 years.
Periodically Anna Maria Island Turtle Walk offers Free Turtle Talks. These events are open to the public.

RETHINK PLASTIC – SKIP THE STRAW SUNCOAST CAMPAIGN

Plastic is great, we thought it made our lives easier, that it can be recycled or that it just disappeared. Plastic does not biodegrade, it only breaks down to microplastics. Microplastics are tiny shards of plastic less than five millimetres in length and can come from a variety of sources one of them being the breakdown of plastic bottles and bags. Microplastics can now be found in: our oceans, our drinking water, in the tissues of marine mammals, stomachs of seabirds and water birds such as ducks.
We are now becoming aware of the reality that plastic is plaguing our environment. Plastic does not just disappear, it pollutes our water sources and soil like a disease.
 plastic-destroying-our-oceans
Americans use 500 million plastic drinking straws every day. The average use of a plastic straw is 20 minutes, but it will be around for approximately 600 years and many will end up in our oceans.
Eliza Ann’s Coastal Kitchen right here on Anna Maria Island
Eliza Ann’s Coastal Kitchen right here on Anna Maria Island is one of a growing number of area beach restaurants that have joined the new campaign “Skip the Straw Suncoast.” This campaign was created to reduce and eliminate the use of single-use plastics straws and food containers. As part of the campaign to save the environment Eliza Ann’s and other Island restaurants will not be giving straws to their customers.
Did you know? —
• Since 1950, it is estimated that 9 billion tons of plastic has been produced and that more than 8 million tons of plastics waste end up in our oceans every year
• Only 9 to 12 percent has been recycled.
• American throw away 100 billion plastic grocery bags every year! A plastic bag takes up to 1,000 years to break up.
• Plastic bags tends to float on the surface and can be mistaken for jellyfish which is a food staple for turtles and other marine life.
• Larger pieces of plastic also floats on the surface and can be mistaken as food.
  • By 2050 scientists predict plastic will outweigh fish in the ocean pound for pound.
• Medical studies are indicating serious health risks associated with plastics and polystyrene exposure.
 plastic-waste-in-our-waters
So what can we do?
Stop using plastic straws, use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, even when you go out, use reusable bags (a single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade), don’t use plasticware at home and take your lunch to work in reusable containers and bags. Although a great start, these are just few of many ways to reduce your waste in your every day life.
 plastic-destroying-our-oceans
Adjust our thinking…
Old: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
New: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Refuse the straw, Reduce plastic consumption & Reuse the plastics we already have, Recycle responsibly
Say NO to plastic straws and any kind of one-time use plastic items. The best option to reduce plastic waste items is to not generate them at all.

SUPERMARKET SHOPPING ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Publix — 3900 E Bay Drive, Holmes Beach, FL — 941-778-5422
Open daily 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM
One stop shopping without leaving the Island, this location is very convenient for the Anna Maria Island vacationer. Publix is a short drive or trolley ride from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217. While this Anna Maria Island store might be smaller than most other Publix stores it offers a great selection of high quality goods. You might find things slightly cheaper on the mainland (Bradenton), but for me the convenience of not having to go inland across the bridge is totally worth the small price increase.
publix-grocery-store-anna-maria-island
In addition to the normal grocery selection, you will find their fresh produce is outstanding and the bakery is maybe a little too inviting. You really must try their key-lime pie, it is the best! They have a large beer/wine selection and the prepared foods are quick and delicious. It’s a great store for picking up everything you need for a beach picnic lunch, sandwiches, pizza, snacks, water and fountain drinks.
publix-grocery-store-anna-maria-island
Deli items are ordered ahead of time or get in line for a custom sandwich, wrap or flat bread. Their ready made rotisserie chickens are delicious and convenient for lunch or dinner. You can even get some really good in-store made sushi! The Publix party platters are a really easy option for entertaining large groups while on vacation.

They also carry beach items such as towels, beach chairs, pool inflatables, sunscreen, umbrellas, etc.
I always find their staff extremely friendly and accommodating. As well, there is always someone available if you want carry out. The staff in the aisles are quick to help you find items and the customer service is excellent!
Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals
Even more convenient, this Anna Maria Island location offers on-line ordering and delivery to your Anna Maria Island Condo Rental. So easy, just go to Publix at Holmes Beach then click on Products and Services where you will find everything you need to place your order.
TripAdvisor Reviews —
  1. Everyone on Anna Maria shops here, and the pervasive friendliness makes it a fun experience. Whether they’re locals or visitors like us, no one seems to be rushed or frazzled. The staff always makes a point to ask where you live and engage you in conversation. The bakery offerings are plentiful and are conveniently located in the first aisle. Hard to resist! They sell Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, which are our favorite brand, and on one visit this year a brand representative was in the aisle offering a discounted price on a package of 1/2 pound each of turkey and ham. It was the perfect package for us. On another visit I just missed a wine tasting! The aisles aren’t very wide, but the feeling isn’t one of being crowded. We always find a good selection of produce and all the staples we need to stock our vacation rental.
  2. This is what grocery shopping should be about! Picture it–my wife and I come down here from NJ every year for 4 to 5 months in winter and another 2 in two week slots throughout the fall. When here we visit this store almost every day. It’s within walking distance of our Condo. Imagine a store where: If you’re looking for something someone will spot you and not only tell you where it is but offer to take you to the spot! If the cash register is idle, they will come out front and solicit customers to come to that lane to check-out! You can see who is in charge of every Dept. through large pictures in the area and, better still, see those people actively working the aisles. The deli almost always offers a sample slice and always tell you what’s on sale. They also do online ordering (great idea during” high season” winter). The Wine shelves are extremely well stocked and very competitive. For the best treat of all check out with Charlie (Ask him his latest golf score) and Terry (Ask him if he cares about Charlie’s golf score) and bumper banter bonus if you get both together. If you get to know Charlie well, ask him to show you his customer letter. He’ll know! Finally, when you’re all checked out (and bagged by one of many wonderful assistants–Ryan is my favorite) they will even offer to take your groceries and escort you to the car! It never stops. Perhaps the secret to their success is that I’ve heard that EVERY employee owns stock in this privately owned business. Gotta go now and shop!
  3. If you’d like to keep your food budget for two on a vacay to the Gulf Coast, under $100.00 per day? I give you “Publix” grocery store’s! Their food bar is fair and their fried chicken rivals any I’ve ever had!! And trust me if you live below the Mason-Dixon line you know fried chicken!! Also it doesn’t hurt to book a room with at least a small kitchenette. You might spend a couple more bucks on the kitchenette, but you’ll save more on the expensive prices at most FL. restaurant
  4. Visited here several times. Convenient, good parking, friendly staff, fresh food, good selection. Nice selection of fresh fish and cheeses.

artificial-intelligence-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals

Artificial Intelligence & Vacation Rental Properties

Artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay, but is the vacation rental industry ready for it?
Amazon’s Echo product that features the famous virtual persona Alexa and Google’s Home product both boasted booming sales in 2017. These products that have become common in consumers’ homes are now moving into the hospitality industry. Shifting from strictly residential home-use devices to commercial environments brings concerns. Those concerns include not just the cost of the technology, but also how AI engages guests and security and privacy concerns since the devices record and listen at all times, although they do have a mute and disable functionality.
 alexa_for_vacation_rentals_smart_tech_anna-maria-island-condo-rentals
Do you want privacy and like to avoid human interaction when on vacation? Soon you might not have to pick up the phone, you can just talk to Alexa or Google.
Amazon recently launched Alexa for Hospitality, which places specially programmed Amazon Echos at participating Marriott Hotels starting this summer. Marriott will be the first chain to install AI in some rooms. The Echo devices will work like the ones you have at home, but will have some skills specific to hotels. You will be able to call front desk, order room service, housekeeping, adjust the thermostat and book a spa treatment. If the hotel has enabled it, the Echo will be able to control the room’s lighting, temperature, and television—great news for germaphobes who hate touching hotel remotes or light switches. Guests will also have the option to connect their personal Amazon account to the Echo, so that they can stream their own music or listen to their audiobooks. Their account will be automatically disconnected upon checkout.
 Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals
So how is Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217 moving forward with this relatively new technology? The only thing that is holding us back is the privacy concerns.
Would you be excited or disturbed to see an always listening Amazon Echo in your vacation rental property? Each one of the players, Amazon, Google and Apple offer different things, do you have a preference? What kind of questions would you ask and what sort of requests would you have? As we continually look for ways to enhance each guest experience we are researching how we can help the AI device enhance those experiences for you, our guests.
Let us know your thoughts. We are listening 🙂

ANNA MARIA ISLAND AREA BEACHES

BEACH HEALING

The beach…what images do you conjure when you hear the word BEACH?
For me, I picture sunshine, white sand, turquoise water, a beach chair and a good book. The beach is my favourite place to relax and recharge. A day at the beach also provides many health benefits and scientific studies reveal that a day at the beach is proven to:
anna-maria-island-beach
Soothe muscle and joint pain — Swimming in the sea improves your strength and flexibility without putting stress on your joints. Water workouts can ease arthritis and muscle pain. For those suffering with chronic pain there isn’t the strain and impact in the water that exists with land workout so water exercise might be a good choice. Swimming or exercising while at the beach is also free and refreshing.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND AREA BEACHES

Help you breath easier — Many reports say that scientists have found that salty air is good for you. Breaking waves emit tiny air particles that inhibit airborne bacteria, allergens and pollutants. Inhaling these microscopic molecules help clear out our lungs by loosening mucus and reducing inflammation which results in an easier time breathing. So it seems ocean air is wonderful for your lungs.
vitamin-d-sunlight-strong-bones-benefits
Strengthen your bones — Sun exposure is the most natural and by far the best way to boost our vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is made in the skin when it’s exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D has many roles in the body and is essential for maintaining strong and healthy bones. Combine the sun with a walk on the beach to increase the benefit. Walking in the sand is considered a weight bearing activity and takes 2-3 times more force and effort than walking the same distance on pavement. Walking on a beach in the sand tends to be more relaxing than walking on a treadmill or track so we often walk further distances without even realizing it. Your steps will probably increase with less effort, more enjoyment and your bones will thank you!
Heal rough, dry skin — Salt is naturally antibacterial therefore, acne, scrapes, cuts, sores, are likely to heal quicker after spending time in the sea. Seawater is rich with antibacterial compounds like iodine which helps to fight infections and the magnesium and potassium in seawater help relieve inflammation. Seawater can keep your complexion clear and reduce redness and roughness. Skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis can improve due to the slightly drying effects from the sodium found in saltwater. For those with psoriasis, the addition of UV light from the sun can help greatly.

Help you to sleep better — Do you find after a day at the beach you sleep better? It can be from any one of these reasons. The sound of ocean waves trigger the release of relaxing theta brain waves and the fact that you are in vacation relaxation mode can set the tone for better sleep. Being out in the sun suppresses the production of melatonin and when we get out of the sunlight our brain releases melatonin making us want to sleep. Sunlight is one of the best ways to re-set our internal biological clock which helps regulate our sleep cycle. We are usually more active when we are at the beach whether it’s an early morning run, lugging all the beach paraphernalia, setting up the umbrella, swimming or beach volleyball. There are so many activities to choose from and we know exercise helps to promote better sleep. Most anything you do at the beach includes a dose of exhausting UV rays. For most people more beach =better some sleep.
Book your vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals -601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217 and head to the beach for some healing.
