CYCLING ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Cycling is encouraged over driving, with friendly paths and bike rentals available. You don’t have to travel with a bicycle to enjoy cycling on Anna Maria Island. Enjoy the Island wildlife as you are greeted by squirrels or native Blue Heron. If you are lucky, you may spot dolphins frolicking in the waves.

Many shops provide bike rentals for guests to just get around or to explore the island. Enjoy the day/week/month with a bike ride. Put your car keys away and enjoy your bicycle ride to the beach.

Any of these companies will be happy to help with your Bike Rental.

Bike Paths- In addition to riding on roadways and through neighbourhoods the cities of Anna Maria Island have several designated paths. Paved bike friendly paths make it easy to ride from one end of this 7 mile long Island to the other.  Bicycles are not permitted on the beaches as the powdery sand make cruising a little difficult.

The city of Bradenton Beach has five miles of bike paths and bike lanes along Gulf Drive, connecting to more than 50 miles of similar lanes across the island, as well as more on Longboat Key.

From the condo heading south on Gulf Drive passing Cortez Beach you will then access the Coquina Beach Path which leads to beautiful Coquina Beach. Continuing south into Longboat Key will take you to St. Armand’s Circle and beyond. On the Longboat side, there is a 10 mph speed limit and cyclists are required to have a bell to ring for pedestrians.

Riding East over the Cortez or Manatee bridges provides a pleasant trail to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the Intracoastal Waterway. Travelling East on Cortez Bridge you will pass the quaint Village of Cortez and if you’re feeling adventuresome continue on into the City of Bradenton. If you travel East over the Manatee bridge there is a bike path through Robinson Preserve which offers great nature viewing opportunities along with safe flat trails.

We had the most amazing stay at this condo. It’s been recently remodelled so has a great mix of modern amenities with old Florida style. The location is excellent and the view of the ocean at sunset unbeatable. Terry was a great host and speedy to reply to any questions we had. We hope to be back. We would recommend to anyone.

“Thank you Terry. We had a perfect stay and hope to be back next year.”

Anna Maria Island Historical Museum ~ Belle Haven Cottage ~ Old City Jail

This small museum is worth the stop! The staff are welcoming and extremely knowledgable. All sorts of interesting facts – ie: one of the original island residents was the creator of the Fig Newton recipe! – Or, tourists used to rent WOOL bathing suits at the beach when they visited the island!
We stopped in on a whim while shopping on Pine Avenue and really enjoyed it. You can browse and spend just an hour or you could take your time and spend hours reading and investigating all they have to offer. Great for both adults and children. They offer a scavenger hunt for kids with a prize at the end. Admission is free, but please remember to leave a donation!
Just a short free trolley ride from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island 34217
Learn about the early settlers and the Museum Building that was constructed as an icehouse in 1920. It went on to serve as an automotive garage, a sea turtle hatchery, and a public administration building. In 1992, the City of Anna Maria began leasing the building to the Historical Society for use as a museum. The museum’s exhibits tell the story of the first settlers on the island and their legacy including archived records for research into families and businesses. You can also learn the Island’s fishing and baseball history.
After seeing the Museum visit The Belle Haven Cottage which is a historical cottage furnished with heirlooms and antiques demonstrating early island living. The cottage was originally built on the City Pier in 1920 and was used as a fish packing plant, rental cottage and bait shop. In 1926 it fell into Tampa Bay Bay and was pulled from the waters to become a family home on the Island for decades. Belle Haven was rescued from demolition in 2001 and moved to the Historical Park being restored in 2006.
Continue to the Old City Jail that was built in 1927 to detain local troublemakers and house the rowdies who had a little too much to drink at the local roadhouse. It was used as a jail until it caught fire in the 1940’s. Left with no roof, no windows bars and no door it is used as a photo op for visitors. The jail is one of the most photographed attractions on the island and a  “must-see” site that was featured in Ripley’s “Believe it or Not”.

Sale of Settler’s Bread-On Wednesdays, November through March come for food and fun in the Historical Park.

Taste the original Settler’s Recipe Bread. Proceeds benefit theAMIHS Scholarship Fund.

FRESH BAKERIES ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

The Donut Experiment – 210c Pine Avenue, Anna Maria

We first discovered Donut Experiment during spring break 2016. Since then, we’ve visited many times and brought lots of family and friends – all have loved it. We absolutely love the donuts and all the combinations. We’ve tried many! They are always fresh because you choose your donut and watch while they are made. The wonderful staff is friendly and helpful. The ordering process is easy and efficient. It is a fun atmosphere too – eating donuts right on the porch. Our son, the “Donut Connoisseur” says, “the donuts from Donut Experiment are simply the best!”
Hours: Open daily 7am – 1pm
Hometown Desserts – 507 Pine Avenue, Anna Maria
This little shop is tucked away near the General Store on Pine Avenue in Anna Maria. They have a wide array of cupcakes, cakes, brownies, and scones. This lady knows how to bake! Her key lime coconut cake is a slice of heaven and the chocolate cake is amazing too! Go check out these desserts, just so yummy!
Several area restaurants get their cake, etc. from them. People working there are so nice. If you are on the island, you really must go there and try their cake!
Hours:  Monday – Saturday 10:00am – 5:00pm   Sunday 10:00am – 2:00pm
Cupcake Delights, Inc. – 3324 East Bay Drive, Holmes Beach
Cupcake Delights is a small family owned bakery in Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island. They sell amazing cupcakes and specialty decorated cakes for all Occasions.  The staff are friendly and efficient.
The store is super clean, bright with cute decor and the staff are friendly. All baked goods are made fresh daily right on the premises. Their signature Butter Cream and Cream Cheese frostings are made from scratch using real butter, cream cheese and Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. They offer gluten free products.
We had the red velvet and carrot cake and both were delicious, fresh and very moist. The ladies told us they bake different cupcakes on different days. A must stop for everyone, but go early for the best selection as they sell fast.

I haven’t picked a favourite yet, will just have to keep going back until I’ve tried them all!
