Allegiant Air Makes Flying to Bradenton/Sarasota (SRQ) Easier

Thinking about booking your fall or winter vacation? Our units at Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals have been recently renovated and are ready for you!

Helping to make traveling easier for our guests, Allegiant Air, the Las Vegas based budget airline, has added 24 new nonstop routes from smaller US cities to Bradenton/Sarasota (SRQ).
Air Allegiant’s latest expansion includes flights to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, which by the way, is our favourite airport to fly into. It is a relatively small airport, easy to navigate, with car rentals available and the best — it is only a 15 minute drive from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals.

The new flights, which can be booked on the airline’s website, Allegiant.com will generally be offered twice a week. Some flights are seasonal, others will operate year round. As you might expect the introductory fares will probably not be available for travel around Thanksgiving, Christmas or other peak travel periods.

Here’s where Allegiant is adding flights to and from: Sarasota, Florida (Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport) —
St. Louis, Missouri (MidAmerica St. Louis Airport): Seasonal service begins Nov. 15 with one-way fares starting at $69.
Des Moines, Iowa: Seasonal service begins Nov. 23 with fares starting at $79
Rockford, Illinois (Chicago Rockford International Airport): Seasonal service begins Nov. 23 with fares starting at $69.
Flint, Michigan: Seasonal service begins Nov. 24 with fares starting at $69.
Fort Wayne, Indiana: Seasonal service begins Nov. 24 with fares starting at $69.
Knoxville, Tennessee: Year-round service begins Nov. 21 with fares starting at $59.
Louisville, Kentucky: Seasonal service begins Nov. 25 with fares starting at $59.
South Bend, Indiana: Seasonal service begins Nov. 25 with fares starting at $69.

These eight additional destinations bring Allegiant’s total out of the SRQ airport to 20 cities. Allegiant has by far the most routes of any airline operating at Sarasota-Bradenton. The airline started service at SRQ in April 2018 with three destinations and announced an additional nine in November 2018.
The new flights in November 2019 are expected to bring nearly 54,000 new passengers a year through the airport. According to airport sources, Allegiant has flown 228,000 passengers in its 15 months at SRQ and had an economic impact of $138 million on the community over that time.

Other destinations from Sarasota/Bradenton airport serviced by Allegiant are:
Asheville, N.C., through Asheville Regional Airport.
Baltimore, through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Cincinnati, Ohio
Cleveland, Ohio, through Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
Columbus, Ohio, through Rickenbacker International Airport.
Grand Rapids, Mich., through Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
Harrisburg, Pa., through Harrisburg International Airport.
Indianapolis, IN
Nashville, Tenn., through Nashville International Airport
Richmond, Va., through Richmond International Airport.
Syracuse, N.Y., through Syracuse Hancock International Airport.
Washington D.C./Baltimore MD

Flight dates, times and fares can be found at Allegiant.com.

Discount airline fares are almost always enticing. Allegiant, like fellow discount airlines Spirit and Frontier, charges low base fares plus fees for “extras,” including seat assignment, carry-on or checked bag, in-flight drinks and food and more.

Here are 10 things to know about Allegiant before you book —

allegiant-airline-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals

The ticket price only gets you a seat on the plane. Yes, your seat and a personal item only! The airlines charge extra for seat assignments, checked and carry-on bags, snacks and drinks, including water. To avoid add-on fees check the carrier’s website.
Print your own boarding pass. Allegiant charges to print boarding passes at the airport. Allegiant charges $5 per boarding pass printed by an airport agent at select airports. (The airline doesn’t have kiosks.)

Allegiant does not accept reservations for carriage of fare-paying unaccompanied minors or unescorted children under the age of fifteen (15) years. Children fourteen (14) years and younger must be accompanied by an adult fifteen (15) years or older. Special supervision for any travelers is not offered.
Bags don’t fly free, even carry-on bags. Passengers are allowed one free personal item that stores completely under the seat in front of you such as a backpack, purse or laptop bag. There is no charge for one personal item, provided it does not exceed size requirements.
Want to bring a standard carry-on bag to put in the overhead bin? You’ll pay. Carry-on bag fees vary by carrier and when you pay for the carry on. (See #6 below.) The airline closely monitors the size of those carry-ons.

Each bag must weigh 40 lbs or less and the outside measurements of each bag must not exceed eighty (80) inches. Applicable fees will be applied for those bags exceeding the weight and size limits. The total number of bags allowed may not exceed 4 per passenger. On Allegiant, travelers will pay $25-$30 for the first checked bag during online booking, $45 after booking but before they get to the airport and $50 at the airport. Bottom line: Save by paying for your bags when you book your ticket.
For those us of that like to over-stuff our bags — Don’t. Well, not unless you want to pay. The weight limit for checked bags on Allegiant (see #6) is 40 pounds, not the standard 50 pounds allowed at major airlines. Overweight bag charges apply in all cases.Overweight bags fee — add $50 – $75

Whatever you do, don’t bring a bag to the gate in an attempt to avoid bag fees. Some major airlines often ask for volunteers to check their bags for free on full flights where overhead bin space is bound to fill up. Allegiant charges $50 to check bags at the gate. If you plan to bring a carry-on, pay for it when you book your ticket.
You have limited rebooking options if your flight is canceled or delayed. Because Allegiant doesn’t offer daily flights, if your flight is canceled for weather or mechanical reasons you might not get out for a couple of days.

To prepare for or avoid add-on fees always check the carrier’s website.

Discount airlines certainly grab our attention with low fares, but remember the purchase price is only one factor. Cheap flights are cheap… but don’t forget the ancillary fees. Everything from checked luggage to printed boarding passes to a soft drink while aboard can quickly make a cheap fare pretty pricey.
When you’re looking to maximize every dollar, every trip, it’s worth comparing prices between budget and major airlines.

COSTCO Shoppers — Get Ready! Costco Opening Soon in Bradenton, Florida

Manatee County’s first Costco, one of the most-anticipated new businesses coming to the Bradenton area, is scheduled to open at 8:00 am on Aug. 21st.
The Costco’s new wholesale warehouse, part of a more than 300,000 square foot retail development at 805 Lighthouse Drive in Bradenton, FL is very close to completion. The project, called the Market Place is located at Heritage Harbour on the northeast corner of State Road 64 and Interstate 75.

Did you know that Costco is one of the largest retailers in the world? As of March 2019 Costco has 770 warehouses worldwide. Costco has long been known for selling bulk quantities of high quality foods and other consumables at discount prices. And, Costco will not stock a product if they feel the wholesale price is too high. If you have been in a Costco store recently did you notice that the aisles are not labelled? And, do you know the reason for that? Costco strategy is that we, their customers will wander the aisles searching for what we came for while putting more items in our carts along the way. The same reason Costco places popular items at the back of their store, again more items placed in our carts, not necessarily what we came for, while we go in search for what we really came to buy. In comparison it is actually easier to find a product in Costco than their Walmart competitor. For example, Costco stores display 4000 products open layout compared to Walmart’s approximately 100,000 products displayed in somewhat cluttered aisles. Certainly something to think about on your next shopping trip. And then there is Costco’s legendary free samples. Yes, you can stand in line to fill up on bites of glazed salmon, sausage bites, spoonfuls of yogurt, crackers and cream cheese and so much more.

No matter what Costco’s strategy is, I don’t know about you, but I love Costco. And not just because of the free samples – you see there is a 99% chance you will not find me in a Costco free samples line-up. I have nothing against the free samples, I actually think it is a great way to ‘try before you buy’ a new product, but I just don’t enjoy standing in those line-ups.

You might be wondering, on your one week vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals, why would you want to shop at a huge warehouse and buy bulk items? The answer is simple, you might not, but there is a lot more to visiting a Costco warehouse than free samples and buying bulk-sized everything. From the health and beauty items, good deals on men’s, ladies and kids clothing, yummy fresh treats from their bakery, I usually manage to find something different in one of the many Costco departments. Oh, and how about the $5.00 Costco Rotisserie Chicken? Pair with a salad and you have an easy meal because really, who wants to cook when they’re on vacation – not me!
As well, many of our guests are staying with us longer than one week and prefer a one stop shopping experience which Costco provides. And, I would never forget to mention our ‘Snowbirds’ — they love to stock up on items for their lengthy visit allowing themselves more time to enjoy the beach, pool and other activities.
costco-anna-maria-isalnd-condo-rentals
Here are a few things I definitely think are worth going to Costco for —
Eggs – you can get everything from conventional to free-range eggs, all at a lower cost than at many other grocery stores.
Costco’s Food Court – Filling and inexpensive it’s hard to pass by without stopping at the food court. Choose from cheese, pepperoni or veggie pizza, frozen yogurt, chicken Caesar salads, chicken bake, turkey provolone sandwiches, organic beef-based cheeseburgers, hot dogs or for those who don’t eat meat, try a plant-based açai bowl. For some shoppers it’s all about the hotdog and sofa, and it really is a deal!— since 1985, the price of the soda and hot dog combo has remained at $1.50.
Cheese – Fancy Cheeses, delicious! The Costco’s cheese aisle offers a variety of high quality cheese and you can get a large piece for a good price.
Costco’s ‘Kirkland’ – Great quality house brand products under their own name. Costco’s Kirkland Signature label offers everything from cereal and olive oil to dress shirts and vitamins. And when they are packaged with the Costco store brand – Kirkland Signature the discounts are sweet.
Rotisserie Chicken – The $5 rotisserie chicken is a loss-leader for Costco, but a bargain for us hungry consumers.
Meat – Their meat department is always well stocked with fresh, very good quality products.
Gasoline – The Costco gasoline station is easy to use, straight in and straight out and gas is typically 6 cents or more per gallon cheaper than other stations.
Beer, Wine and Liquor – Costco sells many alcohol, wine, beer, & spirits under the Kirkland Signature label for great prices.
costco-anna-maria-isalnd-condo-rentals
Other than a brand new, brightly lit, impeccably clean warehouse what else can Bradenton consumers expect with the upcoming arrival of Costco?
A large variety of services will be available — According to latest reports, the site plan for Market Place include — the Hair Cuttery, Amazing Lash Studio, dental office, several restaurants such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, Miller’s Ale House, Longhorn Steakhouse, Panera Bread, Blaze Pizza, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Jersey Mike’s Subs and more!

Remember, Costco is a membership warehouse club. Memberships are available online and in Costco stores.
If you already have a Costcomembership card it is valid at any Costco warehouse in the world. Just make sure you tell the cashier that it is an international card and they will input a special code for you to use your card.
So, when you visit Bradenton’s brand new Costco what will you be buying?
Maybe I’ll see you there, just don’t look for me in one of the food samples line-up. 😊

WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN COMPETITION Anna Maria Island & Bradenton, Florida

Tachi Palace World’s Strongest Man competition June 13th – June 16th 2019 brings with it the Game of Thrones star Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, also known for his role as Sir Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on the HBO show.

After an eventful competition in the Philippines last year, which followed two consecutive years of the contest taking place in Botswana, the 2019 World’s Strongest Man competition is back in United States. The contest took place in the United States in 2014 when the World’s Strongest Man was held in Los Angeles. This will be the very first time for the event to be held in Florida!

ami-condo-rentals-strong-man

The World’s Strongest Man competition has been held annually since 1977 and this
year’s event is not only taking place in Florida, but right here on the beautiful beaches of Anna Maria Island as well as on Old Main Street in Bradenton, Florida.
The four day competition from Thursday, June 13th until Sunday, June 16th will include three days of qualifiers and a one-day finale. This year will bring a change from years past with five events in each qualification round and all of the groups will be doing the same five events. The five events include: truck pull, super yoke and farmer’s walk medley, overhead press, deadlift and last man standing. From pulling trucks to lifting and pressing logs, the challenges are designed to push the competitors to their limits, testing their physical strength, their agility and mental toughness.

The public is invited to watch all competitions, free of charge.

So what does this mean for guests of Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals? —
— No tickets and all events will be free to attend.
— Our guests will watch the planet’s greatest strongmen compete for what may be the most coveted title in strength sports.
— You will see 25 of the sport’s most-dominant strength athletes compete for the title. — The event set-ups will be fan friendly.
— All events on the beach are within walking distance from your condo. Alternatively, you can take the Free Island Trolley to both Coquina Beach and Manatee Public Beach. Those events being held in Bradenton are approximately a 10-20 minute drive from Anna Maria Condo Rentals.

Enjoy Sarasota’s own Ski-A-Rees Water Ski Team and their Sunday afternoon show at the Ski-A-Ree Stadium. This free show takes place Sundays at 2:00 pm now through to the middle of May.
We were there to watch them perform last Sunday and were totally amazed!
The Ski-A-Rees put on a wonderful show with great music and the announcers are quite entertaining. The team are a dedicated group doing what they love to do, and it shows! Juggling the demands of full time careers, some are Doctors, lawyers and physician assistants, they unselfishly find time to perform. Their show is non-stop, exciting and a great family activity. The skiers display their talents performing tricks and their skill while making a 16 person skiing pyramid. When you go, be sure to get there at least about hour early as it usually draws a big crowd. There are bleacher seats, some of which are covered, but most of the seats are in the sun so dress accordingly. Sunscreen and hats for everyone! Bring a cushion if you don’t want to sit on the metal seats. We were in the open area which provides a behind the scenes view of the team. Talking to people seated in the covered stands, they were partially blocked from some stunts, but said it wasn’t often. You can also bring your own lawn chair. There is a shaded area under the trees where you still have a good view of the show. We found lots of free parking and there are snacks and drinks available for purchase.
Although the shows and parking are free, donations are appreciated. Please give generously as the Ski-A-Rees are a non-profit organization.

The Beach Bistro has been doing the Saint Patrick’s Day parade for 19 years and hopefully they will continue the tradition. The Bistro usually celebrates St. Patrick’s Day on the Sunday closest to St. Patrick’s Day and with it falling on a Sunday this year, I would guess that is when the fun will happen.
Normally, the parade route starts in Holmes Beach and proceeds north along Marina Drive. You may want to check the link for updates //www.beachbistro.com/

Florida-Strawberry-Festival-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals

Happy NATIONAL STRAWBERRY DAY!

Celebrate at the Florida Strawberry Festival!
#NationalStrawberryDay

Who knew there was such a thing as National Strawberry Day?

As much as I love strawberries I wasn’t aware they had their own day. Well it’s true, today, February 27th, is National Strawberry Day! It’s a day created to celebrate those little red fruits bursting with sweet perfection! These juicy, sweet berries just happen to be one of the most popular fruits in the world and they deserve to be recognized.

Here are a few fun facts about strawberries …
  • There are approximately 8,000 acres of strawberry fields in Florida
  • California produces 80% of the strawberries in the United States.
  • Florida is second in production. The Florida season runs from December to May and peaks during March and April. To meet the demand, winter strawberries are usually imported between November and May.
  • Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside—about 200 of them. A berry has its seeds on the inside.
  • Since the seeds are on the outside, strawberries aren’t true berries, like blueberries or grapes.
  • Strawberries are a member of the rose family.
  • Ninety-four percent of United States households consume strawberries.
  • Strawberries at room temperature are sweeter than cold strawberries.
  • Strawberries are low fat, low calorie; high in vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, potassium.
  • Strawberries contain more vitamin C than oranges.
  • Strawberries contain no cholesterol.
  • Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in the spring and must be picked at full ripeness; they cannot ripen once picked.

Celebrate National Strawberry Day with a fresh bowl of strawberries and cream, a strawberry smoothie, toast smothered in strawberry jam, or a scoop of strawberry ice cream. Yum!
Attending the Florida Strawberry Festival is another way you can celebrate the delicious, bright red strawberry, where it is the main attraction. This 11-day community event celebrates the strawberry harvest of Eastern Hillsborough County. Fill up on strawberries and strawberry themed foods during your visit to the festival. You can enjoy strawberries—straight from the patch, Creamy Strawberry Whip, Strawberry Shortcake, Strawberry Pizza, Strawberry Cobbler, Strawberry Lasagna, Strawberry Milkshakes, Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and much more.
There is expected to be more than 500,000 visitors attending the 48th annual festival which is held at the Plant City (Strawberry Festival) Fairgrounds.
The Florida Strawberry Festival runs for 11 days from February 28 to March 10. Gates open daily at 10:00 am, and close at 10:00 pm.
Admission is $10 for ages 13 and up. Children ages 6 to 12 get in for $5 and children under 5 are free with paid adult admission.
Discount Admission Tickets are available from February 1 to March 11 at participating Publix Super Market locations.
Enjoy the festival’s headline entertainment, youth livestock shows, midway rides, exhibits of commerce and more!

Is there Red Tide on Anna Maria Island?

This is a question we’ve heard hundreds of times over the past few months. As travellers come to Anna Maria Island to soak up the Florida sunshine and spend time on our pristine beaches the red tide question is an important one. Especially with the cold and icy conditions the north and mid-west have recently been experiencing, tourists and other folks are migrating to Florida by the thousands. Whether you can manage to get away for a week or a month, I can’t think of a better place to spend your vacation than on Anna Maria Island.

Now, to answer your question, “Is there red tide on Anna Maria Island”, NO!

Florida’s red tide levels have continually decreased since September when they peaked. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reported yesterday, from their latest lab tests, Florida’s coastal waters are entirely free of red tide algal blooms. This is news we have been anxious to hear, it deserves repeating. According to the latest round of tests conducted by the FWC, they found no red tide present in Florida’s coastal waters, NONE!

Here is a Statewide Red Tide Status Map from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission —
Please be sure to click on the map and expand looking at the dots specifically in our Manatee region.

Naturally, people have been worried about the impacts of red tide so the reports that we are red tide free is certainly great news. For anyone planning to visit us you can now put your worries to rest knowing our waters are clear. As always, we will continue to monitor the conditions and update you with any changes.

Good-bye red tide, hello and welcome, guests! Enjoy the beautiful, turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico and everything Anna Maria Island has to offer.

book-direct-anna-maria-island-condo-rentals

February 6th is National #bookdirect Day!

Today, February 6th, vacation rental managers, homeowners and vacation industry leaders unite as we raise a collective voice to educate the public as to why booking direct is a fantastic option for just about everyone. We are joining forces in a one day #BookDirect campaign where we project a singular message. Our mission is to let all travelers know that there are many great advantages to bypassing those third-party channels/on-line travel agents (OTA’s) such as Booking.com, Expedia, TripAdvisor, HomeAway and Airbnb. We want to encourage guests to book directly with us owners/property managers. We believe that vacation rental homes are the best value for your vacation dollar and there are many benefits of booking directly with an owner and not third party on-line-travel agents.

Did you know you can save money and get even better service by booking directly with an owner or property manager? The biggest reason we recommend booking directly with an owner/property manager is that you will always get the lowest rate. There are no service fees when you book directly from an owner or property manager, and in fact, you can save hundreds by booking directly with the own.

Travellers know Airbnb, VRBO, vacationrentals.com, HomeAway, and TripAdvisor charge fees to consumers. In some cases, these “service” fees are not easily recognizable to a guest who has chosen to book through a third-party.

-HomeAway, VRBO, vacationrentals.com, all charge the guests a booking fee
-TripAdvisor charges both the guest and supplier a booking fee
-Booking.com and Expedia charge the property owner/manager a 15-18 % fee per booking. From a guest standpoint, be aware that this fee is built into the price you pay for your rental. Therefore,         booking fees means increased vacation rental costs to you, the guest.
OTA charges are not insignificant, whether these surcharges/guest service fees are added to or “included” in the rental rate. Bottom line is, these fees translate to travellers paying hundreds of dollars more just to use these big OTA websites.

Here are some other reasons to #bookdirect rather than through an OTA:
1. It’s easier — When you go directly to annamariaislandcondorentals.com you cut out the middle man. There’s no hassle of trying to find available dates from the OTA’s array of homes, there’s no pressure to try to book sooner, and you can find exactly the home you want directly from the source. By going straight to us you can cut out any other hassle and start relaxing before your vacation even begins.

2. Communication between the guest and owner/property manager — Traditionally, sites like HomeAway and VRBO and others were a way to connect owners with travelers who wanted to rent. It was an advertising platform — nothing more. Today, on virtually all of the OTA’s sites, all phone numbers, emails, websites and all identifying information is masked and direct communication between owners and guests is impossible. Unfortunately, the OTA system blocks out any and all contact information and all communication goes through the OTA until after the booking is made. You might want to know if there is a grill, a kayak, what check-in time is, or if there is a grocery store close by. When you book direct, you can ask these important questions and get the answers before you commit to a booking.

3. Book direct with knowledgeable owners — Who knows your destination area better than the owner/property manager? Whether you are looking for restaurants, activities, equipment rentals or tours we will always give you the best and most up-to-date advice. We can tell you about all the fabulous things to do and what not to miss during your stay. With the local knowledge the owner or property manager has, we know all the best places to eat or drink, the best things to do and will give you all the information you need to make sure you have the best possible vacation experience. It’s our pleasure to suggest activities in the area that are beyond the obvious as well as special deals only locals know about. Ask away, we owners are always happy to help and offer suggestions.

4. #bookdirect and receive special offers — Different periods throughout the year property managers and owners have special rates and special offers available. With direct communication with us you get the best offers. These are specials that we use to reward our loyal guests.

5. Special discounts to local activities, tours, fishing charters, rental equipment and more! — Another benefit from booking direct with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals is the partnerships we have with local businesses. We partner with companies in exchange for a nice discount for all our guests. We do not receive a commission from this partnership, we do it strictly to benefit our guests. These are discounts that the OTAs won’t offer you and you won’t find them in local coupon books. Once your direct booking with us has been confirmed , you can take a look on our website at some of the great deals offered.

How do you book direct?
When you are searching for a property and you’ve found a property (or properties) you’re interested in, it’s easy enough to click “Book Now” and complete your reservation. But, savvy travelers are learning to save money and take an extra step. In the property listing, look for a property name or company logo. Then a quick Google location search will help you find the property by matching their name or logo. Once you have that, visit their website, contact the owner/property manager through Facebook, or, even better, pick up the phone and call them.

Next time you are looking to book your dream vacation, skip the OTA’s and go directly to our website — annamariaislandcondorentals.com — #bookdirect and save!
Not only do we offer you a dream vacation, we will make the booking process easy while offering you the best prices with no hidden or additional fees.

Note: Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals offers the above company names and affiliated links as suggestions only. We are not receiving commissions from the above and are listing only to assist our guests. We recommend services that we or close friends and family have experienced.
