Recent reviews, TripAdvisor & Yelp

Our family with little ones ranging from 1 year to 10 years old traveled with First Mate Jessica and Captain Chris tonight for a sunset cruise. We saw a ton of dolphins and had a wonderful time. Chris and Jess were amazing. Such a great, worthwhile experience.

Wonderful company that makes you feel welcome and right at home. Captain Chad and Firstmate Jessica were very friendly and knew the exact spots to go to find dolphins and see the sunset. They knew the history of the area, pointed out certain landmarks and narrated the tour which was wonderful!

We took our daughter and granddaughter on a sunset cruise and had a fantastic time! First Captain Chris took us to see dolphins and first mate Jessica explained all about the dolphins. She told us what kind of dolphins they were, how much they eat, how they sleep and how the nicks on their dorsal fin distinguishes which dolphin they are. Then we sailed out between Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key just far enough to watch the sunset.

Jessica even took pictures of each family using their own camera/phone and a special light so you could still see our faces with the sunset behind us.
Wonderful sunset cruise with Jake and Chad! Not only fabulous sunset with pictures by Jake but also saw several pods of dolphin along with informative dialogue. Highly recommend!!

We visit AMI every spring. Last week, we had the pleasure of taking a boat tour with Captain Mike & Erin. They were fantastic; very friendly & knowledgeable of the area & the wildlife. We saw several dolphins & our hosts even knew their names! We took the last cruise & enjoyed a stunning sunset. This is also a great choice for kids; our girls were treated so nicely & were gifted with a dolphin trinket, which they really appreciated. Parking in this area can be an issue, so allow plenty of time to find a spot, or take public transportation. We look forward to taking this cruise again next year.

A little bit about Bridge Street …. Bridge Street is a walkable community with spectacular water views from the both the pier and the gulf beach. To the East at the end of Bridge Street, is the Pier which at one time was a wooden bridge and the only way on or off Anna Maria Island from the mainland. Now there is a beautiful fishing pier in place of the bridge with wonderful views of Sarasota Bay and Cortez. Historic Bridge Street is an active, beautifully landscaped street spanning from beach to bay where you will find minutes turn into hours, Shopping – Dining- or Playing. With no high-rise condos or shopping malls on Bradenton Beach, here on Bridge Street you will find quaint buildings with a mix of boutique style shops, restaurants and bars.

The Pier is always a place we make a point to go. This pier is free and is nice to walk, to fish or watch others fish. You can rent fishing equipment and there is a fish cleaning stations with places for multiple rods. For those not wanting to fish there are places to sit in the shade with some old fashioned wooden swings at the end inviting you to sit and stay awhile. You will see lots of fish, we have often seen dolphin and there are pelicans and cormorants and many other types of birds as well. Just watching the boats pass by while the Cortez bridge goes up is so relaxing.

Fish Hole Adventure Golf is home to our annual family golf outing. This unique miniature golf course is an old Florida fishing village themed course on Bridge Street. They have a ‘fish fact’ plaque at each hole and it is neat to read about the different type of fish. It has misters, which are really nice on a hot day. It is fairly priced and at the end you have a chance to win a free game which we have been lucky enough to do.

Bridge Street Interiors – I absolutely love this store. This shop is deceiving, looks small from the outside, but once inside you will be surprised how much stuff is packed in. The store has lots of beautiful handcrafted jewelry, the best mermaid jewelry, home accessories, original prints, incredible wall art, scents, candles and tropical apparel.

They offer interior design services and are happy to help you with your decorating needs. Find a piece that won’t fit it in your luggage? That’s okay, they ship!I have been visiting this store for more than 25 years and purchased many treasures here. It is actually one of my favourite stores not just on Bridge Street, but in the whole Bradenton/Sarasota area.
Bridge Street Jewellers – a hidden treasure on Bridge this shop is definitely worth going into. The selection of jewelry is wonderful. It has some exquisite one-of-a-kind pieces, as well as sea life and other fine jewelry. You will see some amazing custom make pieces here. Every time we visit we find the staff to be very helpful, always taking their time with us and eager to answer any questions we have.

Bridge Street Bazaar is such a cute shop with lots of beachy things, summer shoes, hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, purses and those delish coconut patties you can only get in Florida!

Back Alley Treasures is funky little spot. It’s like walking into a treasure chest full of original little treasures you won’t find at home. The Back Alley is home to several local artists’ work, unique jewelry, handmade gifts, great coffee and tasty treats. They don’t just sell home brewed coffee, they also serve espresso creations either hot or cold, island smoothies, frozen lemonade, as well as craft beer & fabulous wine.Live music on popular Bridge Street happens nightly and often in the afternoon as well. On any given day you might hear rock, blues, country, steel drum, and even Irish music. With a lot of great local talent on Anna Maria Island there is always a spot on Bridge Street to sit back and relax or get up and dance. The great thing about Bridge Street is if you don’t care from one s few minute walk will take you to another that’s more suited to your taste.

Restaurants are plentiful on Bridge Street. A few of our favourites are:
Bridge Tender Inn – Indoor or outdoor dining with live entertainment. Great food and entertainment too! Right on the water overlooking Sarasota Bay with awesome views, great tropical drinks and good service.

-Island Creperie – We love this restaurant. Great food and service. Serve breakfast and early lunch and only open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
-Island Time – Right across from the beach this is a fun place to grab some food, drinks and listen to music. Nice indoor or outside seating. Always good live entertainment.
-Bridge Street Bistro – We have always had excellent meals here. The food is awesome with good drinks and a nice wine menu. Nice dining room with white table clothes. Located on the second floor offers a great view, a perfect place to watch the sunset.
Parking is limited on Bridge Street, so we recommend leaving your car at the condo and walking or using the FREE island trolley (there is a stop right in front of our condo).

parasailing-anna-maria-island

PARASAILING ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Florida is the most popular place in the United States to go parasailing because of its breathtaking beauty. To highlight your vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217 consider hitting the skies on a parasailing adventure. Whether you’re looking for something to do with your teens or with your recently retired parents, parasailing is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

parasailing-anna-maria-island

PARASAILING! While gently floating high above the clear, blue water of the Gulf of Mexico, parasailing off the coast of Anna Maria Island is like sailing in paradise. With breathtaking panoramic views of the Gulf and intracoastal waterways, dolphins, turtles or stingray can possibly be seen. As you soar over the glistening water and the coastline unfolds before your eyes, parasailing will probably be the most exciting thing you have done all year or maybe ever!

PARASAILING For the First Time?  Here Are A Few Tips to help you confidently book your Adventure —

anna-maria-island-parasailing

— Lifejackets on before you step foot on the boat. For your sail you will be fitted with a special harness and gently launched and retrieved with the use of a hydraulic winch system. You take-off and land directly on the boat. Take-off’s and landings are very slow and gentle.

— There are myths that to parasail you need to be able to swim. Not true, you do not need to be a swimmer to parasail. Parasailing is actually one of the only watersports where no swimming is required to fully enjoy it.

— Most companies have weight and height restrictions. Be sure to check these upon booking to see if they affect anyone in your group.

— Check the local weather before you parasail. Clear and bright days are best for maximum visibility for sightseeing as well as for good communication with the boat captain. Prior to booking check the companies inclement weather policy, most will not leave the dock. As we have no control of the weather I suggest planning your parasailing during the first part of your vacation, that way you still have time if rescheduling is necessary.

—   If you have a fear of heights or panic easily parasailing might not be for you. This might be true for some, but our last time parasailing a group ahead of us shared that he is terrified of heights and she is terrified of falling, and they both loved parasailing. So if they weren’t afraid while they were parasailing, maybe you won’t be either. If someone has told you it is like a rollercoaster, I think it is more like sitting in a swing gently floating up and back down. There is none of that sinking feeling in your stomach like when you go down the hill on a roller coaster.

Vacationing and Parasailing should be serene, peaceful and memorable. Neither require skill or any previous experience. Both allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy. We hope while visiting with us your experiences leave you with wonderful memories you won’t soon forget.

Below are two local companies to consider (Both are about a 5 minute walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals).  —

flamingos-anna-maria-island

SEARCHING FOR PINK FLAMINGOS IN FLORIDA

Since buying our first condo in 1995 on Anna Maria Island, I have formed a mental image of seeing a wild flamingo. The flamingo is one of Florida’s famous trademarks and even today I still hold that image and think that by some miracle I will see a flamingo flying overhead or prancing nearby on one of our beach walks. Realistically, I know Flamingos are actually quite rare in the Sunshine State of Florida, although they did once inhabit the southernmost point of Florida about a century ago. Now they can only be seen at zoos and conservation areas. Although, recently reported on Feb. 21, 2108 in a paper published in the journal, the Candor, a team of South Florida researchers made the case that the conventional scientific wisdom of almost a century is wrong. They say, Florida in fact has flamingos – real birds, not the plastic kind. Until we know more,  I will suggest one place in our area to go see a real flamingo and that is Sarasota’s Jungle Gardens (about a 20 minute drive from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217

After giving up my arduous search of a pink flamingo, I did get to see some true Florida pink birds, the Roseate Spoonbills at nearby Robinson Preserve. The roseate spoonbill is a large wading bird and just as pink as a flamingo. Not as tall or as svelte as the flamingo, their body is similarly light pink with an almost coral hue and the tips of their wings are a bright reddish pink. While the flamingo has a distinct down turned black bill the spoonbill’s bill is shaped like a long spoon. Both the flamingo and the spoonbill are social animals and live in large groups. On our hike through the preserve we found some spoonbills in a shallow muddy area and watched them “fish” underwater with their spoon shaped bill to catch insects and crustaceans.

flamingos-anna-maria-island

We have found Robinson Preserve a great place to see the Roseate Spoonbills in Florida, specifically in the Anna Maria Island area. The best place to see spoonbills is on the 2.1 mile trail which is appropriately named “Spoonbill Trail” and where we found spoonbills looking for their dinner. While walking through the preserve, you’ll enjoy some of the best birding on Florida’s Gulf Coast, no matter the time of day. With trails for hikers, cyclists, and paddlers to explore, this family-friendly preserve is an excellent coastal destination. A variety of birds and wildlife can be seen throughout the preserve with its 637 acres of preserved coastal wetlands.

flamingos-anna-maria-island

I do not consider myself to be a true bird watcher, I do not know the names of many of the birds I see, but I do get excited when I sight some of the beautiful, unique birds that inhabit this area. I was especially excited to see these flamingo look-a-likes on our recent trip and couldn’t wait to tell our family and friends. Whether you are a true birder or someone like me that enjoys nature, Robinson Preserve with around 100 species of birds is a great place for Florida bird-watching. And, maybe one day my image will become a reality and I will see a Pink Flamingo!

Robinson Preserve is located at — 1704 99th St. NW, Bradenton, FL 34209

Anna Maria Island flights

TRAVELLING TO ANNA MARIA ISLAND  VIA AIR ALLEGIANT TO SARASOTA-BRADENTON (SRQ)

We try to make booking your vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217 as easy as possible and welcome your feedback. We know travel plans can be daunting and booking a flight is no exception. I personally have spent countless hours searching for the most affordable, yet convenient flights.

We are excited to learn that beginning this month, April 2018 Allegiant Air will be flying in and out of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport offering year round service with some non-stop flights. The Las Vegas-based ultra-low-cost carrier announced year-round service beginning in April to Indianapolis International Airport, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport. For the past six years passengers have been making 1 or 2 stops travelling from Sarasota/Bradenton will now be able to fly nonstop to Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

Allegiant-airline-anna-maria-island

Allegiant Air celebrated their inaugural flight at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport on Wednesday, April 11, 2018.

The flight arrived from Indianapolis. There was a welcome celebration that began at 9:00 am with the Airport Fire Department performing the water cannon salute for arriving passengers.

srq-anna-maria-island

This is one announcement we found: The new year-round routes to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) include:

1. Indianapolis via Indianapolis International Airport (IND) – beginning Wednesday, with fares as low as $84.

2. Pittsburgh via Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) – beginning Wednesday, with fares as low as $92.

3. Cincinnati via Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) – beginning Friday, with fares as low as $83.

I’m certain with one-way tickets starting at under $50. this low-cost option will see the number of travellers into Sarasota-Bradenton increase exponentially.

Absolute Anna Maria

This is certainly good news for our guests as the Sarasota Bradenton Airport (SRQ) is only a 20 minute drive from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals. We have flown into SRQ many times and love the easy access and convenience. Short and long term term parking are available directly across from the terminal. When picking up arriving passengers your first 30 minutes is free and 31-40 minutes is only $2.00. There are car rental services on-site. The terminal itself is beyond visitor friendly alleviating the stress that can accompany even the most seasoned traveller.

Electric Vehicle? SRQ provides four level-2 EV charging stations. The stations are complimentary in the short term parking lot.

Possibly this new Allegiant deal will prompt some other airlines to make the move to fly into Sarasota-Bradenton. For example, low cost-airlines Frontier and Spirit, might see the potential growth and demand in Sarasota-Bradenton. They and even some traditional airlines could be next on the line-up of airlines flying into Sarasota-Bradenton Airport. Allegiance has suggested they are exploring additional flights into Sarasota-Bradenton which just might encourage existing airlines to add additional routes.

When booking your flight for your visit with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals be sure to check for flights into the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport (SRQ).

anna-maria-island-city-pier

LATEST UPDATE –  REBUILDING ANNA MARIA CITY PIER

News just in from “The Islander” newspaper — Work on the Anna Maria City Pier will commence in May 2018. All work should be completed by December 2019.

Such great news for local Islanders and tourists alike! Looks like we will be walking on the iconic Anna Maria City Pier before the end of 2019. The view from the Anna Maria Island City Pier is a picture-perfect snapshot. The pier draws thousands each year and takes us back to the pictures, many years ago when people first arrived on the island and they came to this pier. I can’t count the number of times our family visited the Pier, sometimes just to walk, sometimes for lunch or dinner.  One thing our visit always included was the “family photo shoot”. The Pier is such a popular site. We have been so fortunate over the years to meet people from all over the world, but not this year 🙁

The 678 foot pier built in 1911 was already scheduled for renovations when it suffered major damage from Hurricane Irma in September 2017.   Fortunately most of Anna Maria Island sustained little damage from Irma, but the waves and wind made a mess of the foundation and decking at the historic Anna Maria City Pier. The roof was torn off the bait shop and there was significant damage on the northwest side to the wooden planking. In the days following the hurricane an inspection of the pier was done and it was deemed unsafe and  closed immediately. It was unclear at that time when the City Pier and its restaurant would re-open to the public.

anna-maria-island-city-pier

According to the VP of project engineering firm Ayre Associates, the firm in charge of rebuilding the pier, demolition will begin early May 2018 with a completion date of early September 2018. The planks part of the decking will be removed around May 15, 2018. After removal, the engraved planks that were part of the decking will be used to build a custom fence on the perimeter of City Pier Park and at the Anna Maria Island Historical Society. Work on the platform is expected to begin in late August 2018 and work on the restaurant is set to begin in April 2019.

As for the buildings on the pier, a decision has been made on the siding and meetings are underway to discuss changes to the restaurant area. Any changes will not alter the look as Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy has stated that the design and architecture will look exactly the same as it does today.

The new pier should reopen by the end of 2019. I think most will be happy with the decision to keep the look the same; no one wants their image of the 100 year old City Pier to change. The only change anyone wants to see is the removal of the large signs that read, NO TRESPASSING – PIER CLOSED.

The countdown is on … approximately… 597 days until we see …. ANNA MARIA CITY PIER OPEN!!

St. Armands Circle

SHOP & DINE ON ST. ARMAND’S CIRCLE – A ONE OF A KIND EXPERIENCE

From Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217  to St. Armand’s Circle is a beautiful drive straight south along Gulf of Mexico Drive. Enjoy the picturesque water views of the Gulf and see stunning mansions, golf courses and wildlife. This is a favourite of ours and on our must visit list every time we are on Anna Maria Island.
Once you get to the lushly landscaped Circle you will see it surrounds a quiet tree-covered park, known as Circle Park. The outside of the large circle is lined by shops, restaurants, and other businesses in a unique circular configuration. With more than 138 merchants including boutiques, galleries, specialty shops and restaurants, many restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating. The area was founded by circus magnate, John Ringling, and you will see 33 museum quality statues. Many of the statues date back to the 1920’s reflecting John Ringling’s desire to bring art and culture to the city of Sarasota. If time permits take a walk around the park to see the “Circus Ring of Fame”, a commemorative to outstanding circus performers.
St. Armands Circle
The boulevards in St. Armands Circle have wide medians with a park-like setting, on either side are shops, restaurants and businesses.
Parking on and around St. Armand’s Circle is free. Depending on when you go, you might have to drive around the circle several times to find parking.  I have found this to be a good way to acquaint myself with the area. There are a couple of parking lots within a short walk from the Circle. I discovered these on one of my recent trips as it seems I find something new on each occasion.
The area is all outdoor walking and stores have covered awnings for those that want a break from the sun. All stores and restaurants are air-conditioned. Shops line the Boulevard of the Presidents, John Ringling Boulevard, and St. Armands Circle. The intersection formed by the Boulevard of the Presidents and John Ringling Boulevard give the area four quadrants, each with a different themed color. You will see signage that lets you know what quadrant you are in. You can match this up with maps and directories in the area so you don’t get too turned around after walking around the circle too many times.

St. Armands Circle

After shopping and dinner our family loves to wander around St. Armand’s Circle;  it’s great exercise after a delicious meal and there are many really fun shops to go in and out of. Some of our clothing and restaurant favourites are – Tommy Bahama Restaurant and store, Columbia Restaurant, Crab & Finn Restaurant , Daiquiri Deck-music, food/ drinks and Shore just to name a few. For a sweet treat try Ben & Jerry’s or Big Olaf’s ice cream.

St. Armand’s Circle offers something for all ages and is very walkable. It’s also a good place to people watch and see tourists and locals alike.

However, I think a day is not enough time for you to enjoy this Sarasota gem. So, as you plan your next visit with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals you can include another trip to “The Circle.”

You might even encounter some famous people visiting the circle.

The Celebration is being held at The Studio at Gulf and Pine located at 10101 Gulf Drive on Anna Maria Island. The Studio has plenty of free parking and is north of the condo, about a 10 minute drive. Or, leave your car and ride the Free Island Trolley north to Pine Avenue, Anna Maria.

Tickets for the event are available for $30.00 each by calling 941-713-3105.

The event is appropriately scheduled for Earth Day to support the highly successful local Gulf Coast Oyster Recycling and Renewal program (GCORR) in the coastal waters of Manatee County. It is a working partnership formed with a grant from the Tampa and Trolley Bay Estuary Program that includes START, The Chile’s a Group of Restaurants-The Sandbar, Beach House and Mar Vista restaurants, the Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department, the University of Florida’s IFAS Program, and the Gulf Coast Shellfish Institute.

A brief background of the program: GCORR began as a one-year pilot program in 2017 and is focused on extending the program through 2018 and beyond.  As part of the project bins were purchased for the participating restaurants to store the used live shells and a trailer to haul the shells from the restaurants. The employees at the three Chiles Group participating Restaurants, the Beach House, Mar Vista and The Sandbar dutifully collect the shells, clean them in the restaurants’ dishwashers, store them in the holding bins and deliver the shells once or twice a week to a storage area at Perico Preserve. Employees from the Parks and Recreation Department then store the shells for curing and prepare them for delivery to the seeding area. Sounds like a lot of work, but by doing so the project keeps the used oyster shells out of landfills and instead uses them as the hard bottom base to grow new oyster reefs. In its first year 40,000 pounds or 20 tons of oyster shells were recycled. We are all aware of the importance of sustainability and GCORR’s  approach is doubly sustainable as it reduces shells going to landfills and also reduces the need to dig up fossil shells as a base for new oyster reefs.

Brief Summary of An Inspector Calls,

Act 1 – Set in 1912 in Brumley, Midlands, UK the Birling family celebrate the engagement of Sheila Birling to Gerald Croft. Sheila’s father, Arthur Birling is pleased and hopes that the marriage will bring the family businesses, two competitors together to lower costs and higher prices. The women leave the room and Mr. Birling lectures Gerald Croft and his son, Eric BIrling about the importance of every man looking out for himself if he wants to get on in life. During this lecture the doorbell rings unexpectedly and the maid announces that an inspector has arrived. Inspector Google says he is investigating the death of Eva Smith, a young woman who committed suicide. Mr. BIrling denies knowing her, but after shown a photo he recognizes her and remembers firing her in 1910 for organizing a strike over workers pay. Birling does not believe he committed any wrongdoing. The investigation moves to Sheila who recalls also having Eva sacked about her manner when served by her in an upmarket department store. Sheila regrets her actions and feels hugely guilty and responsible for Eva’s death. The inspector tells them that Eva Smith changed her name to Daisy Renton. Gerald acts guilty and Sheila notices his worry, she confronts Gerald when the Inspector leaves the room. Gerald reveals to Sheila he had an affair with Daisy Renton.

Act 2 – Gerald tells the Inspector he had an affair with Eva, but he ended it in the autumn of 1911 and he hasn’t seen her since. Sheila then gives her engagement ring back to Gerald. The Inspector turns his attention to Mrs Sybil Birling, she confesses that she also had contact with Eva, but Eva gave herself a different name to Mrs. Birling. Eva was desperate and pregnant when she approached Mrs. BIrling at a charity she was chairing.  Mrs. Sybil BIrling refused her help  because she was offended by the girl calling herself ‘Mrs Birling’. She tells Eva that the baby’s father should be made entirely responsible and tells Inspector Goole the same. Also, that the father should be made an example of.

Act 3 – Eric is revealed as the father. He stole money from Mr Birling’s office to provide to Eva and is angry at his mother after he learns that she has refused to help Eva. The Inspector tells them that they are all partly to blame for Eva’s death and warns them of the consequences of people not being responsible for each other. After Inspector Goole leaves, the family begin to suspect that he was not a genuine police inspector. A phone call to the Chief Constable confirms this. Next, they phone the infirmary to be informed that no suicide case has been brought in. Gerald, Mr.and Mrs. BIrling congratulate themselves that it was all a hoax and they continue can continue as before. This attitude upsets Sheila and Eric. The phone rings and after Mr. BIrling takes the call he announces to the family that a girl has just died on her way to the infirmary, a police inspector is coming to question them.

The Island Players REVIEWS: TripAdvisor

1. Our second visit to the Island Players Theatre and it will not be our last!

Beautifully maintained little theatre with lots of history – the building was originally a family home located in Palmetto and was relocated to its current site – a real feat of civil engineering!
Very comfy seating with (I am pretty sure) no seats that have obstructions.
Staff and volunteers clearly love what they do and that comes across from the box office to the stage manager to the actors!
Can’t wait for a return visit if we are in the area when there is a production running!

2. Attended the Island Players show “Play On” It was delightful. I don’t much care to go to the theater, but I would recommend this show for all guys that need points at home.
Take your lady or lady friend to see this show. It ain’t Broadway but it was great community theatre.
3. What a fun time in a great atmosphere where everyone is so nice, delightful and hard working. This is a “must-visit” for a wonderful night out.
