Locking for something different to do?
FREE weekly Water Ski Show every Sunday February 4 to May 6, 2018 at 2:00 pm. The show is near Mote Marine Aquarium on City Island. Once you get to the aquarium just follow the Ski-A-Rees signs.
Just a short drive south along Gulf of Mexico Dr. from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Fl 34217
Come out and watch the Sarasota Ski-A-Rees Water Ski Show Team as they perform a themed and spectacular one-hour water show. Fun for the whole family! Prepare to be dazzled with thrilling jumps and tricks, beautiful ballet and swivel lines as well as breathtaking pyramids. See these world-class champions as they rehearse at their base on Lido Key.
The Sarasota Ski-A-Rees are one of the best amateur water ski shows and the only saltwater ski team in the United States. Founded in October 1957 and with the support of the City of Sarasota and generous private sponsors they have been performing free water shows ever since. Being a non-profit organization, without the help from the City, the Ski-A-Rees would not have a place for practices or performances. They hold regular practices and participate in the Florida State Show Ski Championship, Southern Regional Show Ski Championship and compete in the National Show Ski Championship when possible. They were the 2017 National Champions and in 2016 won the Southern Regional Show Ski Tournament.
We thought the Ski-A-Rees put on a wonderful show with great music and entertaining announcers. They are a very professional group and their show is non stop, exciting and a great family activity. The announcer explains the different tricks, the history, and the equipment of the Ski-a-Rees. The skiers show so much skill with lots of fast moving organizing going on. Displaying their talent while performing tricks and even making a twelve person skiing pyramid made us feel like we had stepped back into the 1950’s except the music is up to date which is sure to please people of all ages.
When you go be sure to get there at least an hour early as it usually draws a big crowd. The bleacher seats, some of which are covered, but most of the seats are in the sun so dress accordingly. Sunscreen and hats for everyone! Bring a cushion if you don’t want to sit on the metal seats. We were in the open area which provides a behind the scenes view of the team. Talking to people seated in the covered stands, they were partially blocked from some stunts, but said it wasn’t often. You can also bring your own lawn chair. There is a shaded area under the trees where you still have a good view of the show.

Free parking and snacks and drinks are available for purchase.

Although the shows and parking are free, donations are appreciated as the Ski-A-Rees are a non-profit organization.

Running – The island is 7 miles long. We see runners on the hard pack of the beach all the time or along Gulf Drive every day, sometimes on the sidewalks, often along the side of the road (for lack of sidewalks). So, I suggest, step out the door, run Gulf Drive or head for the beach and run there… or both, yes! How about run south to Longboat Key, which is about 5 miles/one way or North to Bean Point which is approximately 6 miles/one way. There are lots of quiet side streets to run from Bradenton Beach to the City of Anna Maria.

Last suggestion – Walk the beach, or swim in our heated pool. Both are right outside your door and easy ways to stay fit while you enjoy your vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals.

Anna Maria Island-Top Ten Seaside Towns

Top 10 Nominees – Anna Maria Island FL, Bellport NY, Bluffton SC, Cambria CA, Cannon Beach OR, Cape Charles VA, Hampton Beach NH, Ocean City NJ, Traverse City MI, Vero Beach FL

To choose the 2018 finalists, nominations were called via social media. Then Coastal Living looked at their rank on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, percentage of clear and sunny days, healthiness of beaches, commute times, walkability, crime ratings, standard of living and financial well-being of locals, geographic diversity, and Coastal Living editors’ assessment of each town’s “coastal vibe.” The result is an all-star list for 2018 from coast to coast! (Previous winners were not eligible.)

Anna Maria Island was in fourth place spot in the week leading up to the polling closed. I voted as often as they would allow, I sure hope it was enough!

I am one of the many “happiest people” when I’m on the Seaside Town of Anna Maria Island, so the results won’t change anything for me. But, it sure is nice to see Anna Maria Island named in the Top 10. Whether the result is first or tenth anyone living or visiting Anna Maria Island already know the “Happiness in Paradise’ feeling you get while you are there.

The final rankings will be revealed online Tuesday, June 12, 2018. Will Anna Maria Island be declared the happiest seaside town in the United States? We will have to wait a few months to find out. Stay tuned, I will post the results as soon they’re in.

Anna Maria Island - Beach House Restaurant

The Florida Maritime Museum

The Florida Maritime Museum   – 4415 119th St W, Cortez, FL 34215

Just a short walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217

This is a small, but interesting museum housed in the former Cortez village school on the Cortez Nature Preserve. It is located in the historic fishing village of Cortez and has some wonderful exhibits that tell the history of the only fishing community left in Florida dating back to pre WWII. Founded on the importance of the regional commercial fishing industry, the museum tells a number of stories pertaining to all aspects of Florida’s maritime history.
Very enjoyable displays of the local history, including vintage photos of the founding settlers and the local economy, commercial fishing boat models, a terrific collection of shells from the Gulf of Mexico and other historic artifacts. One particular exhibit focuses on the Cuban fishing ranchos in Tampa Bay. For more than 100 years, Cuban fishermen established seasonal fishing camps along the Gulf Coast where they would catch fish, salt them and ship them back to Cuba to sell. The exhibit explores what brought the Cubans to Florida and what happened to them.
We were fascinated by the dioramas depicting how commercial fisherman and boat builders of the Gulf Coast have historically made their living.
The museum also is home to a research library relevant to maritime subjects research. With an emphasis on Florida’s Golf Coast the library offers a variety of books, diaries, letters, logs and records.
We had a guided tour because they weren’t busy, but you can do a self guided tour and read the information. Our volunteer guide was friendly and passionate about the history of the founding of Cortez settlement. He described the native Americans, Cubans and settlers from North Carolina, who all played a part in the history of the area. He also told us about the history of the local fishing industry. After the tour, which took about 30 minutes, we wandered around and look at the exhibits in detail.
The Museum is very educational surrounded by beautiful grounds to enjoy a walk around. On the second Saturday of each month they have Music on the Porch, which is quite entertaining.

There is a gift shop with some interesting nautical items. The museum is free, but donations are appreciated.

When we left the Museum we strolled down to the Cortez fishing harbour, which is also interesting and only a few blocks away.  Along the way we passed some tiny cute historic cottages and enjoyed a late lunch at a great seafood restaurant.

I highly recommend the Florida Maritime Museum and am so glad we went. What a great place to spend an afternoon!

One of my favourite shops to visit, the Olive Oil Outpost is so much more than olive oil! This wonderful little shop has a beautiful selection of wine, cheese, infused oils and balsamic vinegars of all different flavours. I have bought some of the most awesome lemon balsamic and coconut balsamic vinegar.

Located at 401 Pine Ave, Anna Maria, FL 34216, USA and just a short trolley ride from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. – Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217.

One visit I found some Himalayan salt, artisan pasta, honey and Ethiopian coffee. At this unique shop you can expect to find everything from, jellies, organic products, artisan pasta, a coffee bar and various gift items.

They also bring in fresh fruit – locally picked strawberries were just coming in when we went last time, and they’re the best I’ve ever had! They regularly stock limes, lemons, onion, squash, and the biggest best green peppers.

As for cheese, seems like every time I go there has been a great selection of cheese out for tasting. And an olive bar. Loads of pasta and sauces and condiments.

When you don’t feel like cooking they have whatever you need for a fabulous meal. Pick up some cheese, local pickles, bread, oranges, honey and don’t forget the wine. Makes for an easy and delicious meal!

We have enjoyed the wine tastings here. Friendly and informative. The wine is usually from one or two places, mostly Italy, but not all. The owners come and discuss their wineries and the wines. They also provide a few trays of tasty small bites for sampling. bar is good and reasonably priced. Very enjoyable low key approach.

Friday is bread day and they have all kinds, ciabatta, Tuscan rounds and rings, semolina, baguettes, focaccia, tomato bread, almond ring, pepperoni rolls and more! The order sometimes gets delayed because they travel to a bakery in St. Petersburg to bring it back fresh.

Depending on the traffic they are sometimes later getting back to the Island. If you come after 1:00 PM it should be there and there should be lots. Trust me, it is worth the wait!

Added attractions: Outside areas to sit and on chilly nights a separate seating area around a fire pit!  Ice water with lemon inside and very friendly service.

This place is just wonderful! A little gem right here on Anna Maria Island with friendly staff offering great products that are reasonably priced. Doesn’t get any better than that!

A Visit to The Florida Aquarium

On a recent family trip to Tampa we visited the popular Florida Aquarium. This aquarium is spacious and very well laid out. We were greeted by a host of volunteers and provided with a map of the venue as well as a list of animal showtimes and appearances for the day. There are markers along the way listing interesting facts to keep you entertained from the moment you arrive.

Just a one hour drive from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217

We started at Florida Wetlands Trail, home to free flying birds, otters, turtles and alligators. Filled with Ring-tailed Lemurs, hissing cockroaches, and colorful chameleons, this exhibit captures the unique Island of Madagascar and the diverse animals that call it home. We were amazed at the variety of birds that were showcased in this area. The educational boards throughout were awesome telling us what kind of birds we were looking at with a list of facts about each one.

On the second floor of the Wetlands gallery is the Journey to Madagascar. In this area you will see ring-tailed lemurs, chameleons, geckos, cockroaches and a colourful Indian Ocean reef.  I was feeling brave and crawled into a small dark alcove inside a tree to hear hissing cockroaches, a rather cool thing to do. We learned a lot from the educational displays in this area. I didn’t know that 80% of Madagascar’s plants and animals are exclusive to that country only.

Next was Bays and Beaches which features a 300 pound Goliath Grouper, spiny lobsters, and species that are home to Tampa Bay. The awesome Stingray Beach allowed us to touch stingrays and sharks. I was surprised that their skin felt firm and extremely slick. Stingray Beach is also home to penguins. The aquarium does have a few African Penguins, but they are not currently on exhibit. You can still see one by attending a daily “penguin talk” held at specific times, or get up close and personal by registering for an encounter with one.

We all agreed The Coral Reef Gallery was the most impressive exhibit. The 500,000 gallon tank with viewing windows and a walk-through tunnel giving you the illusion you are in underwater depths. It is full of coral tunnels and caves, reef fish, eels, sand tiger sharks, barracudas, green sea turtles and dozens of other exotic fish and sea animals. At the Coral Reefs, you truly get to examine sea life’s natural habitat and the lighting and colourful displays were fantastic. South African penguins make appearances in the Coral Reef Gallery. For an additional cost, you can purchase Penguins: Backstage Pass, a 30 minute long encounter where you will get an up-close look at the daily lives of , these cute little creatures.

Ocean Commotion offers virtual dolphins and whales, multimedia displays and presentations This area is home to tons of jellies, octopus and tiny fish. Each tank has a plaque giving descriptions of the plant and animal found inside along with facts about their lifestyle. For those who enjoy aquatic life, this is the exhibit for you!

No Bones Zone is a unique presentation of unusual creatures with no backbone such as sea stars (formerly known as star fish) and sea cucumbers. This touch and learn area is designed for the young marine enthusiast with low tanks and lots of hands-on opportunities, but enjoyed by all ages.

Make sure you bring swimsuits and water shoes for the kiddies at Explore-a-Shore, a two acre outdoor waterpark. There is plenty of seating for parents as well as beverages to enjoy while you watch your littles. You can have lunch at the Caribbean Cantina, a full service bar and grill or the Café Ray that serves a variety of delicious looking food. The Aquarium gift shop contains a wide variety souvenirs for purchase and best of all, their prices were affordable.

There are some others thing to do, for an additional fee, like Wild Dolphin Cruise, Close up with Critters, and Behind the Scenes Tours as well as Swim and Dive Programs. Check the Florida Aquarium  website for more information.

Overall, this is a wonderful aquarium. An amazing and educational experience. A great way to spend the day!

(There is often is a Groupon deal available so if you are planning to go, check out Groupon first! It doesn’t allow you to purchase the same day passes so make sure you plan ahead.)
