YOUR ANNA MARIA ISLAND VACATION – MAKE IT YOUR BEST!

Once you step foot onto Florida’s Anna Maria Island, walk on the white sand beaches and view the crystal turquoise coloured water and stunningly beautiful sunsets you may not want to return home. Come taste delicious seafood at the many waterfront restaurants, soak up the abundant sunshine and experience all the features of an exotic, tropical vacation on this seven mile long Island on Florida’s west coast. Surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Anna Maria Island is comprised of three friendly little towns: City of Anna Maria in the north, Holmes Beach in the middle and Bradenton Beach to the south. All over Anna Maria Island you will find quaint boutiques, family owned restaurants with none of the commercialization associated with many vacation destinations.
 Anna Maria Island flights
Getting to and Getting Around Anna Maria Island
Book your flight into Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (only 20 miles from the Island), Clearwater/St. Petersburg (45 minutes from the Island) or Tampa International Airport (1 hour from the Island). Anna Maria Island is a small island and is easily walkable. Or, you could consider renting a bicycle from one of the many rental companies on the island that at your convenience will drop off and pick up your bicycle. Bike from Bean Point, the northern point of the Island to Coquina Beach which is a beautiful beach at the South of the Island. We recommend touring the whole Island, the Island is small, but there is lots to see and do.

Dining
With so many fine restaurants on Anna Maria Island you will find it hard to decide where to dine. But, one thing they all have in common with no exception is their fresh seafood.
Order the catch of the day on the covered deck at the Beach House Restaurant, Blue Marlin Grill or Waterfront Restaurant, just to name a few. Once you book your vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals we will provide you with a complete list of our favourite places to dine. Many restaurants in Bradenton Beach offer live music while you dine. On your way back to the condo stop at Big Olaf’s for some of the best ice cream on the Island.

Quiet Night In or Out
Anna Maria Island is certainly not a party island and most people come to the island to relax and enjoy the old Florida vibe. With no night club atmosphere, we find many of our guests like to enjoy a late night swim in the pool or relaxing in their comfy condo. If you do want a late night out wander down to Bridge Street to one of our favourite restaurants/bars like Bridge Tender Inn, Island Time Bar & Grill or Drift In, all are in Bradenton Beach. With live music playing you can dance the night away and then walk back to the condo in five minutes.

Plan Your Outdoor Activities
There is no shortage of outdoor activities on Anna Maria Island (AMI). With the beach directly out front of your condo, sunbathing or building sand castles might be top of your list, but if you’re looking for adventure AMI has lots to offer. Whether you’re interested in paddling, cycling, ziplining, and of course plenty of swimming AMI has it all. Take to the water with an afternoon of kayaking, diving, snorkelling or paddle-boarding. There is a rental company less than a five minute walk on the beach that rents boards, kayaks, sailboat and jet-skis. You might enjoy exploring the Island on your rental bike followed up with a nature walk at one of the several preserves nearby. Want to see Anna Maria Island from the sky? Consider Parasailing and enjoy the beauty of the Island from above. Looking for dolphins, manatees, stingrays or sharks? Anna Maria Island has an abundance of tours available. If you are interested in booking a dolphin tour, deep sea fishing trip, chartering a boat, or something specific, we can make recommendations according to your interests.
Avid golfers can easily head across the Cortez Bridge to the mainland for a round of golf at nearby Manatee Public Golf Club. If you’re not feeling like 18 long holes of golf try the Fish Hole, an awesome mini-putt course on Bridge Street less than 5 minutes from your condo.

SEGWAY TOUR BRADENTON BEACH, ANNA MARIA ISLAND, FLORIDA

Catch the Segway trend and take a tour around Bradenton Beach, Cortez and Longboat Key on a two-wheeled, self-balancing scooter. Cruising along on a Segway, you are basically just standing there while you whiz along absorbing the magical feel of the Old Florida atmosphere on Anna Maria Island. You will enjoy the comfort of a device that does all the work for you leaving your senses free to take in the experience. It is a one of a kind way to absorb the character of the Bradenton Beach area with unobstructed views of the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While you ride along laugh and tell stories as you learn some history of the Island and see sites not seen from a roadside view.
Is a Segway adventure something you should do on your vacation? With the stories our friends, families and guests have shared, I highly recommend it as a one of a kind vacation experience.

April 2018 TripAdvisor Reviews —
  1. We had the best Segway experience with Jack from Segs by the Sea. He took us on a great 2 hour sightseeing tour & showed us the best way to experience the Segways themselves with confidence & ease. Highly recommend!
  2. We had a blast riding the Segways! They are so much fun and very easy to control once you get the hang of it. They have you practice on a side street for about 10 mins before the tour begins. Our two kids are 12 and 14, and they both did great on them. We took the 90 minute tour at 9am, which included riding the Segways over the bridge to Longboat Key…such a great experience! This is great way to tour the area.
  3. Oh my goodness! I loved it so much!! Skip was a great tour guide! We’re taking the 1 1/2 hour tour next year!
  4. What a fun time!! Perfect for an 11 and 13 year old boys and me, mom. JACK WAS AWESOME! I felt very comfortable and the boys thought he was “cool”. Totally worth the price!!!

FLYBOARDING ADVENTURE NEAR ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Looking for a different type of adventure while staying with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals? – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217

For those of you that enjoy snowboarding there is a very good chance you will love Flyboarding. They are similar in that the balance of your body is used to control the board and when you are practicing either, both boards feature boots and straps to ensure that your feet are bound to the board.
I had no idea what Flyboarding was until our friends said they were going to try it. After doing a little research this is what I came up with — The Flyboard is a device that is attached to a watercraft. The watercraft follows behind the rider. The Flyboard is roughly the size of a skateboard with bindings or boot attachments for your feet. The binders are there is to ensure that you won’t fall off the board in mid air. Your Flyboard is connected to a hose that connects it to the jet exit of the jet ski. Propelled from water jets from below the device, the water it pumps out is what provides the thrust to get you out of the water and keep you up in the air. How high you go is controlled by the water pressure from the watercraft/jet ski.

Our friends had a blast when they recently went Flyboarding with Top Gun Flyboards (no, I wasn’t brave enough and decided bystander would be a better title for me). After watching them and talking about their experience here are a few tips/suggestions we put together:
—Before you go having a basic understanding of what Flyboarding is all about. Go on the companies website or watch some on-line videos so you are better prepared for your adventure.
—Book the right amount of time. For a beginner 30 minutes is probably enough. You don’t want to overdue it and be sore and then not be able to enjoy the remainder of your vacation. For those that have done it before, go ahead and book an hour or an all day session for those really adventurous ones.
—While you are flying, focus on something around you rather than constantly thinking of falling. Maybe pick a focal point from the great view around you. This will give you something else to concentrate on rather than the thought of falling.
—You will be wearing a helmet, but a head first crash will still hurt so you want to break the surface of the water to reduce the impact. Hopefully you won’t crash, but if you do try to dive into the water putting your arms above your head, one hand on top of the other much like diving.

Imagine being propelled into mid air soaring above the open ocean. You can experience just that. Book with a local company TOP GUN Flyboards to try this one-of-a-kind adventure. Whether you’re already a fan of flyboarding or if you’ve never tried it, we’re certain it will be an adventure to remember.

PARASAILING ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Florida is the most popular place in the United States to go parasailing because of its breathtaking beauty. To highlight your vacation with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217 consider hitting the skies on a parasailing adventure. Whether you’re looking for something to do with your teens or with your recently retired parents, parasailing is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

parasailing-anna-maria-island

PARASAILING! While gently floating high above the clear, blue water of the Gulf of Mexico, parasailing off the coast of Anna Maria Island is like sailing in paradise. With breathtaking panoramic views of the Gulf and intracoastal waterways, dolphins, turtles or stingray can possibly be seen. As you soar over the glistening water and the coastline unfolds before your eyes, parasailing will probably be the most exciting thing you have done all year or maybe ever!

PARASAILING For the First Time?  Here Are A Few Tips to help you confidently book your Adventure —

anna-maria-island-parasailing

— Lifejackets on before you step foot on the boat. For your sail you will be fitted with a special harness and gently launched and retrieved with the use of a hydraulic winch system. You take-off and land directly on the boat. Take-off’s and landings are very slow and gentle.

— There are myths that to parasail you need to be able to swim. Not true, you do not need to be a swimmer to parasail. Parasailing is actually one of the only watersports where no swimming is required to fully enjoy it.

— Most companies have weight and height restrictions. Be sure to check these upon booking to see if they affect anyone in your group.

— Check the local weather before you parasail. Clear and bright days are best for maximum visibility for sightseeing as well as for good communication with the boat captain. Prior to booking check the companies inclement weather policy, most will not leave the dock. As we have no control of the weather I suggest planning your parasailing during the first part of your vacation, that way you still have time if rescheduling is necessary.

—   If you have a fear of heights or panic easily parasailing might not be for you. This might be true for some, but our last time parasailing a group ahead of us shared that he is terrified of heights and she is terrified of falling, and they both loved parasailing. So if they weren’t afraid while they were parasailing, maybe you won’t be either. If someone has told you it is like a rollercoaster, I think it is more like sitting in a swing gently floating up and back down. There is none of that sinking feeling in your stomach like when you go down the hill on a roller coaster.

Vacationing and Parasailing should be serene, peaceful and memorable. Neither require skill or any previous experience. Both allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy. We hope while visiting with us your experiences leave you with wonderful memories you won’t soon forget.

Below are two local companies to consider (Both are about a 5 minute walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals).  —

St. Armands Circle

SHOP & DINE ON ST. ARMAND’S CIRCLE – A ONE OF A KIND EXPERIENCE

From Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217  to St. Armand’s Circle is a beautiful drive straight south along Gulf of Mexico Drive. Enjoy the picturesque water views of the Gulf and see stunning mansions, golf courses and wildlife. This is a favourite of ours and on our must visit list every time we are on Anna Maria Island.
Once you get to the lushly landscaped Circle you will see it surrounds a quiet tree-covered park, known as Circle Park. The outside of the large circle is lined by shops, restaurants, and other businesses in a unique circular configuration. With more than 138 merchants including boutiques, galleries, specialty shops and restaurants, many restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating. The area was founded by circus magnate, John Ringling, and you will see 33 museum quality statues. Many of the statues date back to the 1920’s reflecting John Ringling’s desire to bring art and culture to the city of Sarasota. If time permits take a walk around the park to see the “Circus Ring of Fame”, a commemorative to outstanding circus performers.
St. Armands Circle
The boulevards in St. Armands Circle have wide medians with a park-like setting, on either side are shops, restaurants and businesses.
Parking on and around St. Armand’s Circle is free. Depending on when you go, you might have to drive around the circle several times to find parking.  I have found this to be a good way to acquaint myself with the area. There are a couple of parking lots within a short walk from the Circle. I discovered these on one of my recent trips as it seems I find something new on each occasion.
The area is all outdoor walking and stores have covered awnings for those that want a break from the sun. All stores and restaurants are air-conditioned. Shops line the Boulevard of the Presidents, John Ringling Boulevard, and St. Armands Circle. The intersection formed by the Boulevard of the Presidents and John Ringling Boulevard give the area four quadrants, each with a different themed color. You will see signage that lets you know what quadrant you are in. You can match this up with maps and directories in the area so you don’t get too turned around after walking around the circle too many times.

St. Armands Circle

After shopping and dinner our family loves to wander around St. Armand’s Circle;  it’s great exercise after a delicious meal and there are many really fun shops to go in and out of. Some of our clothing and restaurant favourites are – Tommy Bahama Restaurant and store, Columbia Restaurant, Crab & Finn Restaurant , Daiquiri Deck-music, food/ drinks and Shore just to name a few. For a sweet treat try Ben & Jerry’s or Big Olaf’s ice cream.

St. Armand’s Circle offers something for all ages and is very walkable. It’s also a good place to people watch and see tourists and locals alike.

However, I think a day is not enough time for you to enjoy this Sarasota gem. So, as you plan your next visit with Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals you can include another trip to “The Circle.”

You might even encounter some famous people visiting the circle.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH A CULINARY EXPERIENCE ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm come and enjoy a different culinary experience while supporting START (Solutions to Avoid Red Tide).

START’s Earth Day Culinary Celebration will feature delicious local, sustainable seafood selections and tropical libations created by the event’s primary sponsors: The Sandbar, Beach House and Mar Vista Restaurants.

Beach House Restaurant just a few minutes walk from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217.

anna-maria-island-culanry-experience

The Celebration is being held at The Studio at Gulf and Pine located at 10101 Gulf Drive on Anna Maria Island. The Studio has plenty of free parking and is north of the condo, about a 10 minute drive. Or, leave your car and ride the Free Island Trolley north to Pine Avenue, Anna Maria.

Tickets for the event are available for $30.00 each by calling 941-713-3105.

The event is appropriately scheduled for Earth Day to support the highly successful local Gulf Coast Oyster Recycling and Renewal program (GCORR) in the coastal waters of Manatee County. It is a working partnership formed with a grant from the Tampa and Trolley Bay Estuary Program that includes START, The Chile’s a Group of Restaurants-The Sandbar, Beach House and Mar Vista restaurants, the Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department, the University of Florida’s IFAS Program, and the Gulf Coast Shellfish Institute.

anna-maria-island-oyster-recycling

A brief background of the program: GCORR began as a one-year pilot program in 2017 and is focused on extending the program through 2018 and beyond.  As part of the project bins were purchased for the participating restaurants to store the used live shells and a trailer to haul the shells from the restaurants. The employees at the three Chiles Group participating Restaurants, the Beach House, Mar Vista and The Sandbar dutifully collect the shells, clean them in the restaurants’ dishwashers, store them in the holding bins and deliver the shells once or twice a week to a storage area at Perico Preserve. Employees from the Parks and Recreation Department then store the shells for curing and prepare them for delivery to the seeding area. Sounds like a lot of work, but by doing so the project keeps the used oyster shells out of landfills and instead uses them as the hard bottom base to grow new oyster reefs. In its first year 40,000 pounds or 20 tons of oyster shells were recycled. We are all aware of the importance of sustainability and GCORR’s  approach is doubly sustainable as it reduces shells going to landfills and also reduces the need to dig up fossil shells as a base for new oyster reefs.

anna-maria-island-art

Earth Day 2018 at The Studio, bring your friends and family or come alone and mingle with other visitors. Stations will be set up offering culinary creations created by the team of chefs from the Sandbar, Beach House and Mar Vista restaurants. While there, take a look at the local art which will provide the backdrop at the Studio. Special door prizes will be given out and there will be a number of silent auction items available to bid on. Silent auction items featuring Anna Maria Island products, gourmet meals and vacation opportunities.

Sounds like a fun evening, combining good food with support for a worthwhile program.

2. Locals frequent this location with their pets in tow, or launch your canoe at the entrance to experience the mangroves from a different perspective. Personally, the trails are the way to go- whether hiking or biking. Even better, they are adding additional trails using recently donated property. Shorelines and bridges give easy access to “blueways”. Geocaching is an extra. What a treat.
3. The wide paths here wind in and out of greenery across small bridges. There are numerous places to stop and picnic, enjoy the view, and or climb a lookout tower for a view of the river winding by and you can see all the way to the skyway bridge. It’s good for bicycles and walkers.

FREE TRANSPORTATION ON ANNA MARIA ISLAND

Over the years many of our guests of Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida, 34217 have asked if they need a car during their stay. The answer is no and we are happy to provide the following transportation suggestions for those without a personal car to use.
Anna Maria Island offers several means of transportation.
You can travel FREE from one end of the Island to the other with Anna Maria Island Trolley Service. Operating 365 days a year from six in the morning until ten thirty at night running every 20 minutes you will see green Anna Maria Island Trolleys traveling up and down the entire length of Anna Maria Island. Daily service runs from the Anna Maria City Pier which is the northern part of the Island, to Coquina Beach at the south. There are many stops all over the Island, with a stop right out front of Anna Maria Condo Rentals. You will find Trolley stops every two to four blocks and most have covered seating while you wait. Trolleys are air conditioned and some offer open air-seating.
You can continue on to surrounding areas, including Bradenton, Longboat Key and Sarasota with MCAT (Manatee County Area Transit). MCAT connects with the FREE Anna Maria Island Trolley and you can get on the Long Boat Key Trolley and for .75 cents, ride it all the way to Sarasota and back. MCAT (Manatee County Area Transit) partners with SCAT (Sarasota County Area Transit) in operating the Longboat Key Trolley from Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island to downtown Sarasota via Longboat Key and St. Armand’s Circle. Daily service runs from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every 60 minutes. Trolleys offer both air conditioned and open-air seating. The Longboat Key trolley does not operate on major holidays.

Island Beach Monkeys (941-565-6542) is another FREE transportation service. Their drivers, all Island residents work for tips only. I think the advantage of this service over the Trolley is the hours of operation. Their service runs Noon – 3am, 7 days a week and 24 hour service is offered by appointment. Their fleet includes an 8 passenger Golf Cart Limo, two mini-buses, an SUV. And even have a karaoke-equipped vehicle. They offer service to individuals and groups. Need a ride to dinner, run errands or tour Anna Maria Island the Island Beach Monkey is available to drive you wherever you need to go. You are not limited to just Anna Maria Island, they will also transport you to downtown Bradenton Cortez and Siesta Key. Want to go shopping to the Ellenton Outlet Mall? Well, they will take you there! You can also pre-book trips to the Tampa Bay and the Sarasota area. Island Beach Monkeys is fun means of transportation on or around Anna Maria Island.

Golf Cart Rentals is another means of transportation, but not Free. This type of transportation deserves its own article so please check our future blogs for information.
