Best Time of Year For Fishing On Anna Maria Island

The best time to fish on Anna Maria Island depends on what you're hoping to catch, but generally, the prime seasons are spring and fall. Anna Maria Island is one of those rare US fishing destinations that's lovely to visit year-round.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of migratory fish like tarpon, a major draw for anglers seeking thrilling catches.

Summer months are popular for inshore fishing, though the warmer waters can make deep-sea fishing a bit more challenging. Snapper and grouper are plentiful at this time.

Fall (September to November) is also excellent, as fish like snook and redfish are abundant in the waters around the island.

Winter can be a quieter time for fishing, but it still offers great opportunities, especially for those targeting species like sheepshead and trout.

Regardless of the season, Anna Maria Island offers year-round fishing opportunities, so you're sure to find a time that suits your fishing plans

Anna Maria Island truly is an angler’s paradise in which you are spoilt for choice at every turn. Fish from a boat, the beach, or one of the piers or bridges joining the island to the mainland.

Be prepared for a run-in with many species swimming in our beautiful blue waters, from bluefish to bonefish, trout to tarpon, grouper to flounder, and everything in between, including mackerel, drum, amberjack, snapper, sea bass, snook, and shark.

Here's a closer look at the island's fishing piers.

Anna Maria City Pier

AMI City Pier sustained hurricane damage in recent years and has been closed for repairs. It's scheduled to open in fall 2026, and when it does, it's sure to reclaim its status as one of the best fishing spots on the island for catching saltwater fish.

Bradenton Beach Historical Bridge Street Pier

Bridge Street Pier is a popular spot for catching grouper, flounder, mullet, bluefish, and ladyfish. The pier has recently been refurbished and includes a restaurant, Anna Maria Oyster Bar, at its entrance, as well as a bait and tackle shop where you can rent and buy fishing gear.

The pier lies close to the popular shopping hub of Bridge Street, which is a great place to pick up souvenirs.

Rod And Reel Pier

Back in 1973, one legendary angler reeled in a giant 1,386-pound hammerhead shark, a world record, from this pier. It was and still is the largest shark ever caught off a fishing pier.

Sadly, Rod and Reel Pier was destroyed by a hurricane in 2024. The owner is currently fundraising to rebuild it, and the legendary restaurant that was housed on the pier is temporarily stationed inland at Holmes Beach.

Although there's no fishing to be done here, grabbing a bite to eat at the temporary Rod and Reel Restaurant will help to support the rebuilding of the pier.
