What Happened to the Regina?
The Regina, built in 1904 in Ireland, sank during a severe storm in 1940 while carrying over 350,000 gallons of molasses.
Originally a steel steamer, it was converted into a tanker barge and was en route to New Orleans when it encountered freezing temperatures, strong winds, and high waves. As the tugboat Minima attempted to tow it to safety in Tampa Bay, the towing cable broke, and the Regina drifted helplessly toward Anna Maria Island, eventually running aground on a sandbar.
Despite being just 200 yards from shore, the crew stayed aboard, fearing the turbulent waters. Local residents built fires to signal the crew, but the Coast Guard couldn't reach the vessel due to the storm. Sadly, the ship’s cook and his dog perished after jumping overboard. The remaining crew members were eventually rescued, but the barge and its cargo were lost.
Today, the Regina is recognized as one of Florida’s 11 Underwater Archaeological Preserves, attracting snorkelers and divers with its intriguing archaeological features and abundant marine life.
